"I wouldn't call it a controversey until the named starting QB is not the player who truely won the job."
Bingo! There's no controversy right now, just competition. If Zwick does indeed win the starting job, I would hope that Tressel puts in Smith when he can...I don't want to see our #2 QB get next to no reps, like McMullen did the last two seasons.

With all the attention on Smith & Zwick, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Boeckman worked his way into the 2-deep at some point this season.

If Boeckman does work his way up to backup that would open up Smith to be able to play some WR or H-Back. I see Troy sitting the bench more if he is the sole (playable) backup than if he is 3rd string QB.

Welcome aboard exhawg. Nice to see you found your way over.
As far as the "contoversy" ... I think it's great. OSU should ALWAYS have 2 or 3 stud QBs battling for the starting job. I know that hasn't always been the case, but it should be.

Thanks 3yards, this looks like a nice place. I just hope it can stay a donny free zone.

From O-Zone it sounds like Smith has been sick for a while and missed a bunch of practice. Sounds like Boeckman had been looking good getting all of the reps as the backup.

I'm just happy to hear that there is no plan to use a two QB system.
When Coop did this with Jackson and Germaine I believe there was no real flow to the offense. The following year Germaine took over and the offense was great.
Stick with one Qb and allow the offense to mature and develope under him.

I think that Zwick will get the job as well. I would much rather have a good, solid, passing QB than a slash/scrambler type. Sure, some guys do that well and make it work (Mike Vick), but unless you're really a top-notch athlete it could just be a recipe for trouble. Look at Stanley Jackson.
OSU hasn't had a really good honest-to-God QB in a long time. I'm hoping that Zwick turns out to be that kind of guy.
Now, having said all of that, obviously I want the best guy in there. So, if for some reason Zwick just can't cut it, I'll support Smith if he turns out to be the best choice.
