How can you guys claim 7 national championships?
To my eyes, that is totally bogus.
In neither 1961 nor 1970 did you finish #1 in either of the polls. Furthermore, the AP national champion in both those years had a better record than you. ('61 Alabama went 11-0 to your 9-0-1, '70 Nebraska went 11-0-1 to your 10-1)
The only case where a team has a legitimate argument for being called a national champion despite not being #1 in either poll is when that team clearly would have been named #1 if the polls would have been taken after the bowl games. (clear example: Arkansas went undefeated and won its bowl game in 1964, while "national champion" Alabama lost in the Orange Bowl to a team Arkansas beat)
Otherwise, any team can claim a bogus national championship based on somebody's computer formula. Texas has been called the national champion based on computer formulas in 1914, 1941, 1947, 1961, 1968, 1977, and 1981, in addition to the three from the major polls. So that gives us ten national championships to your seven, right?
Wrong.
We have three, and you have five. Face reality, and reprint those t-shirts.

Gee, how [censored]ing original a debate over national Championships in a sport that does not crown one on the field. Never seen this subject beaten to death before.
Glad blowin-a-horn is here to set the CFB world straight.

Eh, do I really want to get in to this? Well here's the short story.
Most OSU fans only count 5 MNC's for the Bucks. The school officially recognizes 7. They (7) were awarded by nationally recognized agencies (IIRC, the 2 in question before bowl games) and so the school has a legitimate claim, but most fans are more pragmatic and can claim 5 with no hesitation. They are all mythical anyways. If you want to get in an uproar, go ask the Michigan fans why their school claims 9 or 11 or whatever. Or maybe the 17-20 that Alabama seeks to acknowledge. Maybe you should talk to the USC alumni that are trying to get the school to recognize one from the 40's. I think you're just going to be spinning your wheels through. There is no end all be all for ranking and awarding NCs. Not until an NCAA sponsored championship is in place (see playoff).
Actually, you might want to change your attitude just a bit as well.

How do I do it? It's pretty easy, actually. A couple years ago, McDonald's put out a series of glasses commemorating Buckeye championship seasons, and there were seven glasses in the set. Therefore, that's what I'm going with. McDonald's is a multinational organization that can buy and sell all of our asses. Who are we to argue with them on this matter?
You know what, if somebody saw fit (within reason) to declare my favorite team the best in the country, I'm gonna celebrate that as a great season for them. Quite frankly, anyone else who has a legit claim at doing the same for the seasons you question is free to do so in my book - I don't really give a damn. It doesn't take anything away from the fact that those seasons were great ones for Buckeye football.
