Zone Blocking

I know Hawg is the expert here so maybe he will enlighten us.

I don't think That it is the scheme that is the problem. If you watch Smith's Td run the blocking was great, they came off the first level and got to the second level.

The problems I am seeing are:

1. Datish and Hamby are letting guys slant underneath them on the backside into their gaps, Why not cut them. I just don't see the backside working hard sometimes. That is where the cutback lanes are.

2. No hook blocks from the end man on the line of scrimmage, so the rb can turn the corner.

3. The big one I see is no one going after the front side backer. If he is over the guard, the guard should step playside and on up to the backer. They are helping out the center when the guy is head up on the center and not getting the front side backer. You would think he would be the most important guy to block.

This happened on the play after Mo Wells draw play. He had a huge cutback lane, but the Frontside backer got into the backfield untouched and made a shoestring tackle.

4. I would also like to see the recievers stay on their blocks a little bit longer.

5. I think Boone is a better blocker than Datish and is going to start seeing more time.

When run correctly zone blocking is great, but it sounds like our guys aren't running it correctly. Truthfully I didn't pay that much attention to it this past week. I'll have to remember to Tivo it this week. On outside zone plays most of the backside guys should cut somebody, but the back should never cut back inside the block of the front side guard on an outside zone play. You don't cut block on inside zone plays because the back is supposed to read his keys and find the hole depending how the defense plays it. From what I've heard it sounds like the OL isn't doing a very good job of double teaming the DL to the LB. When this is done correctly either gap the LB picks will result in him being blocked.
An example: On a inside zone play to the right the LG and C are responsible for the NT and MLB they need to get their hips together and drive the NT back into the MLB. If they are saying "Ok the NT is on the C so he'll block him and the LG has to run out and block the MLB," they are going to get beat. The MLB will be able to run though the front side A gap before the LG can get to him and blow up the play. This could very well be what they are doing because I haven't seen much to make me think the blocking schemes are very well thought out.

I think the point of attack is good, they are getting good double teams, they are just not coming off, I don't understand why, and when they try they are too late.

Actually, it's the lack of execution on zone blocking that is getting old.

In that case they might be getting to into the double team. They need to keep their eyes up and their outside arm free so that they can come off on the LB when he declares his gap.
