An Open Letter to College Game Day
Gentlemen,

Today, you had a nice little discussion along with the "bottom line" caption of "Is USCs the best offense ever?"

Sirs, this is week 4. Four.

Can we at least allow half the season to expire before we start comparing USC with the greatest teams of all time? Please? Yes, USC is very good. But "The Greatest Offense of All Time????" Sounds like a great after season discussion. After the season, we can see, first, if USC is even the greatest offense of 2005. Then, assuming they make that cut, we can move along to the "all time" comparison.

Gents, you'll no doubt recall that only a couple years ago, Oklahoma was prematurely dubbed the "Greatest team of all time" only to lose their last two games. And, the "greatest team of all time" not only lost, they lost badly.

I'm hoping USC gets so much smoke blown up their collective asses that they explode.

What's surprising is that so many people keep kissing their asses when there's so much smoke back there. Normally people don't like to kiss things that have smoke leaking out.

In my opinion, a better argument can be made for the USC offense because the key components are the same from last season, whereas ranking the defenses on a short schedule is prejudiced from the beating that USC has placed on each of them. And I'm guessing that the Game Day crew, and others, are not just basing their accolades for USC off this season alone--I think they're considering the winning streak and the common nucleus driving that streak.

I don't think what you're saying is unreasonable, I just tend to agree with the Crew on this one. This USC offense is unstoppable. I didn't think that was the case with the Oklahoma team a couple seasons ago, but I do think it's true with USC this year.

The only thing that can stop USC's offense is injuries (which would be unfortunate). I don't see any defense out there doing it. Hope I'm wrong.

Great point scooter. I also understand BKBs point, and it is valid, but this is the same logic (basically) that applies to one of my pet peeves in football arguments: the "record against teams that finished in the top 10" argument. To me, it's like wow, so a team is 0-7 against teams that finished in the top 10....well, if that team had beaten them, then it stands to reason they wouldn't have finished in the top 10, so what's the point? Same reasoning here...if a team hangs 70 on someone, their defense is going to look terrible statistically, especially if it is early in the year. Time will tell how good or bad those defenses really are.

All that said, I have pointed out and agreed before that dubbing them the greatest offense ever (or even more ridiculous is Senile Jackson saying Leinart is the greatest college player of all time) is just wrong at this point...if they go undefeated and hang 50 on Texas or Ohio State in a Bowl game...then we'll talk.

Although i respect your opinion, the same thing was said in 2002 about cryami's offense. Their avg. scoring drive took a little over a minute, but we all know what happened when they played a motivated and capable defense.

I think this describes Notre Dame this year. Notre Dame has the ability to beat USC. Will they? That's a different story. But Notre Dame will be the toughest battle the USC offense has faced since Leinart took over.
