Well after a hard loss, what better is there to do than look ahead?
I post that because it's true. After the Texas loss, it was a relief to look ahead to the rest of the season. After this loss, it'll be a relief to look forward to michigan and the rest of the season. Then after that we'll look forward to the bowl game.
I for one, am actually not a fairweather fan who jumps on or off the bandwagon after one bad play, or a loss. It seems people are so quick to make impulsive judgements without further review it drives me nuts.
I would give my analysis of the game ( And I don't think it was bad playcalling ) but i'll save that for another thread.
This thread we'll look forward to next year. Why not?
I for one am a believer of the fact that our offense CAN be not only good, but dominant. Our offense this year has three problems holding it back. They're undersized, we have a bad quarterback, and we make too many mistakes.
A balanced offense is how you go. Look at USC. They're just about as balanced as you can get. Same with Texas even.
Next season, here is how I think we solve our offensive woes.
-Run more out of a pro system, similar to USC, Miami, and those other programs. Use a good passing game, but not necessarily a spread attack. No gimmicks.
-Move Teddy back out to Cornerback. He's not being taken advantage of enough on offense, and should be a corner. He'll be more useful there than he is on offense.
-Solve the quarterback debate before the first game. I personally hope Schoenhoft can start as he has shown me things we havent had in any of our JT quarterbacks. That would be having a strong accurate arm. But whoever can run the offense best needs to be able to spread the ball around to all the receivers.
-Get Lyons and Dukes on the field. I have a strong feeling that Holmes will be gone this spring. With that in mind, I think that either Lyons or Gonzo will step up to take his spot. Gonzo has the edge in experience, but Lyons absolutely tore up fall camp on a bad knee. Dukes will be an excellent slot guy who can hopefully run reverses and some of the same plays we had ginn on. Lyons needs to be on the field as he adds a physical big target for a quarterback to throw to. Receivers like these are so underrated in terms of being able to move the chains.
-Get Boone on the field starting sometime this fall. We're going to need him in there with plenty of experience against big 10 caliber ends.
-Put Marcel Frost in at Tight end. Another forgotten component to the 2002 team was Ben Hartsock. Can't even explain how many clutch 3rd down catches he made. Frost looked amazingly athletic in the spring game, and we need a tight end who can get open, block, and catch as well. Something we probably don't have to the point we need to right now.
Play wise, I'm still scratching my head at why we don't get our backs into the passing game more often. Watch Notre Dame play as they use a similar system to New England did. They pass to the Runningback as much as they do the receivers.
Use Screens. Once again, I think we have used maybe two all year? Not that they're a staple of our offense, but they very well could be.
Throw the ball outside the hash marks. I honestly think the times Smith has thrown the ball outside the hash marks is in single digits still. Not many people notice this, but as the season has been going on, it's grown painfully obvious that he looks in front of his line, or nowhere.
Use more wide receiver screens. With ginn on the offense in the spread, it's easy to predict. With a more down to earth offense, and no ginn in there, we can easily set some screens to Dukes running behind Gonzo and Lyons. This type of play is a staple of the Michigan State offense, and has been extremely effective against everyone so far. San Diego state scored their touchdown on one of these.
Use more play action. Simply said, we don't use it as much as we should. Especially for the amount that we throw over the middle, and the way we use ginn, we need to pull the safeties and linebackers up and keep them honest.
I'm a believer!

Excellent post. Especially about the offense.
I am not looking ahead to next year just yet, I am looking at next week right now.

Nice post...the only issue I will debate is the play action.
We try to run play action now but two things happen:
1) It is predictable because you can (even as a casual observer) predict our plays in advance. Thus it is ineffective.
2) We don't have very well coached QBs so they spend 1.5-2.0 seconds acting out the PA instead of making their reads.
So if the opposing team sees it coming and we waste time doing it, I would simply not do it.
How about this....a Wing T? That's much more fun to watch at least.

I have your readers digest version of the 2006 OSU football preview.
Troy Smith will still be the QB.
Jim Tressel and Jim Bollman will still be the offensive brain trust.
The defense will replace 7 or 8 starters and be understandably weaker than the 2005 version.
Regular season will be anywhere between 7-5 and 9-3 depending on how quickly the D comes around.
Sad but easily predictible.

jaxbuck, could you please add a few more pessimistic comments to this board? I forgot we should just give up on next season now. There will still be flaws but to tel | |
