In Tresselball it is usually the defenses job to hold the lead and not for the offense to gain it back.

As for the being behind, that is a very crazy statement. I mean even FSU was down or tied with the Citadel this year.

Also some peopel are giving a lot of criticizm after we lost two games to two very good teams.

Well I know we didnt execute to score the td, but can we give some credit to Texas's D. If their O' started inside the 35 we would expect our D to hold their O' to 4 tds. It isnt like we came away with no points and didnt try to score.
Let's clear up a little confusion here - I'm not talking about being down 7-0 in the first quarter. I'm talking about being down (by any score) with less than 6:00 left in the game.

Secondly, yeah, people are being critical for losing two games to two tough opponents...but those opponents were not as good as us. They weren't as talented as us. They just outplayed us...and they didn't play with handcuffs on.

Thirdly, if Texas did score a TD or two on our D, I would be upset, but blame the offense/special teams/whoever for giving them the ball four times inside the 35.

Well I can think of a Wisky in 03 when we came back with 2 minutes left and they scored on that long pass. Also MSU was in the last 2 minutes.

I think we have had some comebacks, but we are never out of games and we can't always make the plays. It isnt like we have Elway and his late game heroics at qb.

PSU played the same way we play every week. They beat us at their own game. I am sure if we score on that last drive and win in ot, their fans would be complaing that Paterno sat on the lead, like Tress always does.

Also I don't think we played handcuffed against Texas we just didnt make plays. Take for example if we play handcuffed we don't try the pass on 2nd down and move back 5 yds on Hustons missed fg.

Also It is hard for me to sit here and say those teams arent as talented as us. I think overall the three teams are pretty equal. I think 7 out of 10 times the home team would win in the games too.

I'm just wondering why so much of the spread offense?

I seem to recall tOSU running alot of I formations and guys like Terry Glenn, David Boston, Joey Galloway(to name just a couple) having huge years for the Bucks. I'm more old school in I think we need to run more power formations. Make defenses commit to the run, and get more 1 on 1 match up's for the receivers. I know you won't keep them all happy by running 1 and 2 receiver sets, but it works better than making them happy by putting them on the field and not getting them the ball.

For one, spread is en vouge, much like the triple option back in the 70s.

It's not a bad O, it just needs to be run efficiently. Short passes, quick hitter runs... Seems to me, and I'm no Offensive Guru, but it seems to me our blocking schemes don't open running lanes the way they should for a quick hitter running game... I'm think about Purdue here, Jared Void I think it was, got ALL DAY to run because of the blocking schemes out of the "pass happy" O.

OSU seems to prefer to run the QB rather than to hand off out of the spread.

One major problem I have with tOSU running the spread.

The O line is not recruited for this type of offense. The spread needs very mobile O lineman IMO. I believe for the blocking to work right you need more pulling and trapping. The defense commiting to one thing and hitting them with something else. Watching NW(who doesn't have the same caliber of athlete's) I was very impressed with the way they made it work when they ran it. They have smaller more mobile lineman.

The other problem you run into is execution. I know that if you execute most of the plays in the spread they will normally be effective. Poor execution and not getting the ball into the playmakers hands in space is the biggest problem for the offense.

Just my 2 cents.

It's probably best to just agree to disagree at this point. It's been a fun debate, but now we're into the realm of simply disagreeing...no way do I think PSU has near the talent and experience of us, especially on offense. Their playmakers are all frosh, save for a QB with less experience than either one of ours. We can keep going in circles, but what's the point?

Again, good debate. It's nice to be able to hash this stuff out without roid rages and name calling. Well, at least every once in a while...
