i'm as disgusted by this loss as i have been in a LONG time... maybe the second week of November in '98...

Penn State loss sucked, but losing to NW last year had to me my low point or the complete ass whoopin Iowa gave us.

Quote:
By now - in my head - I have played out the scenerio 4-5 times of: Carpenter and Salley comming up to Smith and Ginn looking at them square in the eyes and saying "We bust our ass on every play to get you the ball back and win this game! We are tired of you slacking off on your part, enough is enough, play smarter and try harder!!!"
You know I am sure the O is embarassed by their performance, I really do not think it is a lack of effort at all or even playing smarter. It really is a matter of execution. Now is that the players or the play calling or both? I have no idea, but I do know that those kids play hard very hard and I am not disappointed in the effort at all.

To be honest, Im not sure. Maybe you didnt read all the numbers but Indiana and Illinois has a better offense than we do! We have the 4-5 star talented, blue-chip kids in there, but it makes me question why we arent - at least - middle of the pack to the top in the Big Ten on offense. Right about now, you can pretty much say that we dont have the best recieving Corps in the Big Ten, but I strongly refuse to believe that one. I know they take themselves seriously out there, but hell, maybe thats the problem. They play so seriously and over-anylize situations that they arent able to play ball and have fun. Its gotta be hard on em, with fans like us making thread talking about their effort and their [censored] ups daily. But, they need to let it all go and play ball....I just wish I could put my finger on what truely is the problem.

Does this look like the face of a happy young man?
That looks like a face of a young man who fully realizes they are not playing to their potential, and the kid is a winner, he wants expects nothing else. Again the trouble with this team is not effort or desire IMO.

check my tresselball breakdown thread to realize why the stats are like they are.

Other than that I think it just comes down to execution. I wish I had this game on tape so I could break it down, but I dont so I cant really jump to major conclusions.

Um, it's not the WRs that are overanalyzing, its the fans (you have to be crazy to think they aren't trying out there). Smith used to be able to throw the ball to them (Texas, Iowa), now he can't (PSU). When that happens, we lose. it's pretty simple. They were open plenty of times and smith didn't get the ball to them. I'm sure yelling at the WRs is going to do a lot.

I never meant yelling, but just trying to put some fire under their ass's, lol. Maybe I should have used the words of "not trying" - "lack of execution to potentional" is a better phrase. I just see SO much in all of our athletes on offense and am frustrated as to why we are not part of the top when it comes to Offense. The Dispatch ahs a pretty good article written today about it, Im not at home or else I would copy and paste it. But, anywho, Im seeing them put in the effort, just not seeing the "click" and its disheartening because of the talent that is left out on the field every Saturday night due when the games are over and we are left to see such great and talented young men rank last in the Big Ten.

The disturbing part of those stats is that the running percentage on 1st down is 73%. You are playing right into the opposing defenses hands. Throw the ball on 1st down more. No wonder why this offense is so predictable and easy to defend against great defenses. Can we please see some variety on 1st down.

On 1st down against Penn State
Passing - 10 yards per completion, 7 yards per attempt
Running - 2.8 yards per attempt

Ohio State has ran the ball 70% of the time on first down in all but one game, Miami. That is making it much easier for defenses to gameplan for. This is not putting the offense in a great position to succeed when everybody is stacking the line on 1st down. It is much easier with less pressure on a QB to throw the ball on 1st down than on a 3rd and 5+.

Look at 3rd down against Penn State
Passing - 4 yards per completion, 3.5 per attempt
Running - 8 yards per attempt

I believe Ohio State was in a lot of 3rd and 5+ situations against Penn State. That yards per completion and attempt is pathetic.

Look at the michigan film, and then look at the penn state film. Now I know that they arent even in the same ball park defensively, but look how confident Smith looks, and look at all the intermediate routes. Against Penn State, almost everything was short, and Smith looked shaky all day...
