bucknut11: "Here's a question for ya Sloops (or anyone else), do you think it would've mattered? If Auburn would've picked up, say, San Diego State instead of the Citadel, do you think that would've put them above OU in the BCS?"
Maybe. Maybe not. You really can't say. Lets switch it around: lets say Auburn picked up a mid to lower level team from a BCS conference: say Missouri, or Oregon State, or someone like that. Do you think their chances improve drastically? I think so.
Its tough for me to have sympathy for the SEC. Other than Bama & Tennessee, all the powers in that conference traditionally avoid scheduling an out of conference team with a pulse like the plague.
You know the only non-SEC BCS Conference opponent Georgia has played (excluding Bowl games) in the last 10+ years? Georgia Tech.
How come Florida backed out of the Miami series (now twice)?
I never see the Citadel on Ohio State, scUM, or Penn State's schedules .. how come this same Auburn-BGSU scenario never came up with them?

I think they would've needed a top-15 opponent to overtake OU. I do'nt think mid-level BCS would've been enough. Just my opinion.
I wasn't aware of the SEC scheduling chickens, I just know that OU's always WAY overrated because of the media's love-affair.

It makes you wonder why tOSU in considering putting a 1AAA team on their schedule, regardless of proximity. It would sure suck if YSU costs us a shot at the NC one year.

there's no way that OU wasn't going to stay at #2. The thing is, OU played nobody that great outside of Texas. Auburn's conference trumps anything OU did all year. OU's schedule was not great by any means, therefore they have no business being there on account of Auburn's tough schedule (minus a few OOC opponents, OU's weren't that tough either). OU got in on their name, just like USC is getting in on their name this year. They haven't proven they deserve to be killing Texas every week, yet you stay at the top until you lose if you are a former champ.

they aren't. The rumor was about 06, and that was filled by BG. IIRC, they will be D-I by the time we might play them (in 08???).

Here are the final BCS standings for 2004. Oklahoma was #1 in almost every computer, there's no way that 1 more tough opponent for Auburn would have moved them ahead of Oklahoma overall. If they went ahead of USC in the computers, Auburn still would have been #3 in the BCS, since 2/3 of the ranking is the human polls.
