I would have to agree with grad here. The recruiting process alone allows for the staff and/or head coach to develop a very close relationship with at least the 85 scholarship players on the team.
I know that in college my position coach and head coach knew just about everything that was going on in my life at that time. I wasn't a starter and didn't really last on the team for that long, but I would have had no qualms about going to either guy about something that was bothering me or that had happened in my family. Even after my "playing days" were done. |

I would consider myself a very open person (almost to a fault at times) and have confided in a number of coaches (and other adults) about personal matters, and yet when I've struggled with depression my pattern of opening up was completely reversed. Sometimes you can tell when someone is depressed, other times they mask it quite well.
I do not think this is something that is going to cause a trainwreck for anyone. It is not something that someone will carry with them for a long time either. However, I think it is fairly careless considering the sensitive nature of someone committing suicide, on a number of levels. It's not just about the people where it hits close to home. I guess I just have a problem with my coach making me think one of my closest buddies just committed suicide. |

I'm sure between the head coach, coordinators, position coaches, training staff, graduate assistants, and Sparky the 85 year old equipment manager, every player is pretty well covered. Really, I'd like to hear HAYN's experiences with this before speculating any further. |

What the hell has this thread become?
I stand by my assertions above, but if we're now saying coaches don't know their players, I'm signing off. Coaches don't CONTROL their players, I think I can buy that, but I think they know em pretty well. I don't think I've argued Carrol was careless because he doesn't know his players, although, I may have inadvertantly implied the same. |

Everyday, at post-practice meetings, we discussed, as a staff, the daily news from the kids. Everyone contributes...who is drinking on weekends, who may have a girl pregnant, etc. Bewteen the entire staff, we always had every kid covered down to the most minute details. |

I guess I just see suicide/depression being the sort of thing that you don't mess with.
Tressel clearly knows his players like a book. I just don't know if you can know for sure on something this touchy. My earlier statement was misguided. I think it is very possible for a player to not have revealed a close relative/friend's struggle with depression/suicide (especially if they were not "successful"). |

It is indeed up now... my apologies! It wasn't when I posted earlier.
