We have a very good D this year, no question. Any comments I have regarding our D relate specifically to the Minnesota game and even more so to the first half (although 135 yards in the 3rd quarter is nothing to brag about). Arguments to the contrary seem to center around the idea that Minnesota had a really good offense.
Come again? Good pitching stops good hitting. A good D stops a good O. That is what they do. This was the second most yardage gained against an OSU D in the 114 year history of the program. They scored 31 points. None of those points were on turnovers or kick returns. They were ALL scored against the Defense. In fact Minnesota had to overcome poor field position the entire game (they started precisely one drive beyond their own 24 yard line). They had three 80 yard TD drives. You do not play good defense and have those results. You simply do not. If you are trying to make the case that OSU has a good D this season nobody is arguing with you. |

I think you two are simply argueing over the definition of a GREAT defense at this point.
I am not concerned about this game, we just played the top rushing team in the nation, and for WHATEVER reason, their quarterback decided he wanted to be called peyton for one evening. Make no mistake that was the best game cupito has played probally EVER. He isnt that good, he was playing inspired football. Hard to stop an ELITE rushing team when their quarterback plays like that. Go Bucks.. Now you two quit argueing and someone give me a hand here.. OH |

They got extremely lucky through the air. We blitzed the safety and they happened to run a 30 yard route over the middle (any longer or shorter and it would have not been a completion). Their jump balls were very risky, and they came away with all of them. Our defense gave up 24 points, and then the backups yielded another 7. This is a great defense. Minnesota is a very talented offense, and Texas and Michigan State are elite offenses. In all three games, we yielded some first half plays, but clamped down on them in the second half (for the most part). |

Look, nice try, well-delivered, and I applaud you for your enthusiasm, but ultimately your arguments are unconvincing. I've watched plenty of football and seen plenty of great defenses (and great offenses, too). Sorry, but the 2005 version of the Buckeyes' defense is not "great", either by the overall standards of college football, or by the far more limited standards of Buckeye football. Hey, keep rooting, keep hoping, keeping dreaming - be a fan. I prefer to root on Saturdays, then take off the glasses and analyze this team during the remainder of the week. As a "fan", I believe in my heart that they are great; as an "objective observer", I know in my mind that they are not. |

Not sure you can put PSU or Texas on the D, LJB...
Texas Ohio State scored on six straight possessions - 6... of course, most of them were FG's and it turns out, not enough points. OSU created TO's for the O, putting them in great position.... Not the D's fault. (Although, I have to admit the the general statement, they didn't do enouhj is true owing to the fact that OSU lost, thus the D coulda shoulda woulda done better to hold them out of the EZ one more time) Penn State OSU's O gives PSU the ball at the 1. The 1. OSU's D makes PSU take 3 plays putting it in. This score is essentially the difference in the game. |

I'd be hard-pressed to find greatness in any two-loss team. Maybe the 1974 squad, which got screwed by the officials at Michigan State, then lost by a point in a rather meaningless Rose Bowl.... 14-0 is great; 6-2 isn't. Allowing 577 yards isn't great; neither is allowing 456, or 382 for that matter. Allowing 31 points isn't great (especially to Minnesota, which isn't a "great" team in anybody's book). Forcing one turnover per game isn't great. Enough of the numbers - my eyes and my experience tell me that this isn't a great defense. Sorry.... |

Yeah, I already gave you the "generality" that they didn't do enough owing to the fact that they (the team) lost the games in question.

Great defense or not they were not responsible for the loss against Penn State. However, the defense gave up the game winning drive late in the 4th quarter against Texas, at home. As well as they played throughout that game that's not supposed to happen. Last week's performance against Minnesota was dreadful. The Baltimore Ravens have a great defense but lose games all the time because of their offense. The Buckeyes don't have a great defense this year but it's not because of the 2 losses.

I attended that 'rather meaningless Rose Bowl'. At the time, tOSU was #3 in the AP poll, behind #1 Oklahoma and #2 Alabama. Behind us in that poll were #4 scUM (whom we'd just beaten), and #5 USC. Alabama lost their second straight Orange Bowl that day, 13-11 to ND (who had 2 losses). Oklahoma was on probation, so USC won the UPI-Coaches NC that year with a loss and a tie, the first time that the final coaches poll was taken after the bowl games. If we had won that Rose Bowl, 1974 would be another NC year for tOSU, despite the loss to MSU. And we would have had ND to thank for it. |
