Helmet Stickers / Buckeye Leaves (all merged)
OK, maybe this is a stupid question or something, but is there someplace that keeps track of how many Buckeye stickers players have earned?
I know some people may think that's silly or whatever, but I would really be interested to see who has earned the most. When it's such a prominent feature of your team's helmet, it has to have occurred to someone to find out. For the record, even when I was at my height as a UM slapdick, I always admired the pride sticker concept. And after the commercial, I would say to my friends..."shotgunned an entire beer without losing a drop? BUCKEYE!!!" Didn't sit too well with my UM friends. Tough titty. |

I don't think that info is published, you would have to try and count them week to week on TV. Sounds like a hell of a lot of work to me.

Someone keeps that data, I think. But, I don't know that it's "public" That is, I don't think the OSU site, for example, says "Chris Gamble 87 Leaves" But I seem to recall 1460 referring to a specific number of leaves on a players helmet during some of their broadcasts.

Someone tried to do this on B-nuts once. It might have been Mili. It would be great if there was a way to track.

My recollection is that somebody was able to locate some general guidelines on who leaves were given out, but I don't recall anything where what individual players were given was made public.
FWIW - Woody started the tradition in 1968 to acknowledge individual accomplishments and motivate individual effort. IMO JT has taken it in the other direction. He places more emphasis on team goals, which is why you will see players who are redshirting with multiple leaves. This is too much like the youth league concept of a trophy for everyone for my taste. (Which clearly explains why JTs teams are under-achieving.) WDG - I saw that sig over on the Michigan board. It takes for ever to run through its cycle, but is interesting to watch. EX-Wolv - I was going to defend you against Dixie's suggestion that you are stupid, but you are an admitted Ex-Wolverine, so what's the point? |

i'm pretty sure that i remember reading that Donny Nickey set the record in '02 with 104 leaves...
the previous record was Andy Ketzenmoyer with 80-something, maybe like 87... and before that Chris Spielman had the record... maybe the article is archived at the-Ozone, but IIRC, when Tressel first arrived, he was surprised to see that there was no clear guidelines for awarding Buckeye Leaves... so he sat down, and devised a formula... whereas before Tressel came to town, the leaves were pretty much awarded on an individual basis, now, the leaves are largely team oriented... the Special Teams guys would get a Leaf for downing a punt inside the 5 yard line, and for a net return average of 20+ yards, and stuff like that... the D would get team Leaves for pitching a shutout, holding the opponents to under certain amounts of yards, and for holding opponents under a certain 3rd down efficiancy rate... naturally, the Offense would be awarded leaves for yards, and points, but the O-linemen can now recieve Unit leaves for such things as not allowing a sack, or not getting any false start penalties... |

Buckeye Leaves
A coach I know is a collector of team playbooks. He came across the the 1997 tOSU playbook on Ebay and hooked me up with a copy.
We've talked about earning Buckeye Leaves in the past. Here is Coop's system: Team 1. Win= 1 leaf 2. Win Turnover Ratio=1 leaf 3. Score 30 points and Victory=1 leaf 4. 100% on all 3rd and short & 4th and short=1 leaf 5. Score a TD everytime inside the twenty yard line=1 leaf 6. Score everytime inside the twenty yard line=1 leaf 7. Ten Play drive or more for score=1 leaf Individual 1. Winner's Club=1 leaf 2. Offensive Player of the game=1 leaf 3. Big Plays-Outstanding effort(Run/Pass/Catch)=1 leaf 4. Outsanding Hit=1 leaf 5. Great Blocking Performance=1 leaf 6. Scout Team Player of the Week=1 leaf 7. Five or more knock downs by a receiver or running back=1 leaf |

Isn't it also true that there are no leaves awarded on a loss?
