zone blitz
I didn't get a chance to watch the SDS game or much of the NCST game.
Are we running the zone blitz as much as last year. During the washington game it just looked like a 4-3 much of the time and the d-line was pinning its ears back

seems to me that we are keeping things pretty vanilla. there have been some zone blitzes, but most of the time our main line of fraser, anderson, smith, and scott have been getting enough pressure that we dont need to. add to that lbs shooting a gap here and there. god- i dont know how many time fraser has forced the qb out of the pocket with a bull rush. hes been very impressive

We really have not been blitzing too much so far... sometimes a LB is sent (usually up the middle) and a DL might drop into zone pass coverage/shadow of qb... some times a saftey blitz up the middle, and sometime a corner blitz off the outside (of course)... we seem to get a good amount of preasure with the front four, so sending a blitzer hasn't occured as much (3rd and long, we tend to send folks), but as stated, we have really been playing a plain D...the corners still need some saftey help (that should change as the season goes on... as evidenced by all the PI calls) imo... the D looks very good, we need to get the O on track and get those stupid penalties taken care of, and we should be great!!
hey, 3-0 with some things that need to improve isn't too bad...

i think that
we are saving some of our more serious blitzes for later on in the season...

The best type of pass defense is when your defensive line can get enough pressure on the QB that you don't have to pressure by blitzing. That means you can drop more guys into coverage while still getting a great pass rush. The QB gets no time to throw and when he looks downfield, instead of only seeing 4 guys in the secondary, he sees the 4 DBs and 3 linebackers before he gets slammed by the pass rush.
I think Dantonio is utilizing his deep, rotating defensive line personnel as much as he can and trying to pressure the QB with his front 4.
I am absolutely positive that Tressel and Dantonio save things for Michigan.

and you are one hundred percent correct, Rip.
IIRC, the blitz we ran on the final play of the Fiesta was the first time we ran that all game, and maybe all season. it was a simple little weak side blitz, but i don't recall seeing that one before that play...

"Tight Will Tulsa Red Nine" was the call.
That was a weakside linebacker blitz and Cie Grant made a play for the ages.
Stills gives me shivers and chills over 8 months later.
