40-yard dash: 4.49 seconds
2005 stats: 40 tackles, 7 interceptions; 4 fumble recoveries

Chimdi's name is starting to surface as the tOSU staff is scouring Florida. He holds offers from Georgia Tech, Clemson, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Maryland, Wake Forest, and Iowa State while also garnering attention from Iowa, Florida, Michigan State, and Auburn. Chimdi has official visits set up for Maryland (12/16) and Wake Forest (1/6). He claims Georgia Tech as his leader right now.

SEC Schools Lead For Chekwa

 DB Chimdi Chekwa (6-0 170) of Clermont, FL says USC and Ole Miss are his top two right now. "I liked the SEC, I think that's the best conference," he said. "They are recruiting me hard. Ole Miss, I think I have a better chance of playing early. They are about even." Chekwa also has offers from Clemson, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Maryland, Temple and Central Florida. And he's also drawing interest from Iowa and Florida.

 USC is the current favorite of DB Chimdi Chekwa (6-0 170) of Clermont, FL. The Gamecocks have offered along with Clemson, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Maryland and Temple. "Steve Spurrier is there and they need cornerbacks," Chekwa said of USC. "Of all the teams that have offered me, I like them better from what I've seen. And it's not that far from here." Chekwa is also drawing interest from Iowa, Michigan State, Florida, Auburn, South Florida and Central Florida. USC leads followed by Clemson and Ole Miss. He will attend a passing camp at Clemson this weekend. Last season Chekwa had 40 tackles with 4 interceptions. "I match up well with big receivers," he said. "I have good speed and I'm a good tackler." Chekwa was named first team all district and all area as a junior.

Just watched his film and I was pretty impressed. He appeared to have good speed, good ball skills, and a decent tackler. From the film I would take Chekwa over Henderson if we are choosing between the 2.

CLERMONT -- Chimdi Chekwa wasn't the East Ridge High player that Ohio State University coaches first came to Central Florida to recruit this fall, but he is the player they are going to get.

The Buckeyes were hoping to recruit East Ridge wide receiver Richard Jackson. But after he committed to Notre Dame last month, they turned their attention to Chekwa, a senior cornerback who had an impressive season that included interceptions in seven consecutive games.

Chekwa, 17, committed to Ohio State on Tuesday after visiting the school late last week and then visiting the University of Maryland. He also had visits scheduled with Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, but he canceled those after announcing his commitment.

"Early in the year, they came down to see Richard," Chekwa said. "But they found me and started talking about me coming up there. Near the end of the season, they needed a cornerback. So they came back down, talked to me and offered me a visit."

East Ridge defensive coordinator Josh Shaw said the Buckeyes liked Chekwa's size (6-1, 185 pounds) and speed (4.4 seconds in the 40).

"They liked his size and his speed as a track kid who has been to state the last two years in a row," Shaw said. "Those are the two things colleges are looking for in defensive backs -- size and speed."

Chekwa finished this season with 44 tackles, seven interceptions, four fumbles recovered and one caused fumble. He has competed at the state track meet the past two years in the 300-meter hurdles and holds the East Ridge school record in three events -- the 100 (10.79 seconds), the 200 (22.2 seconds) and 300 hurdles (38.7 seconds).

Chekwa has been a big part of the success of East Ridge's football team over the past couple of years as a receiver and defensive back.

East Ridge has been undefeated the last three regular seasons and this year was ranked No. 1 in the Class 6A poll. The team reached the playoffs for the third year in a row.

Chekwa, who had five interceptions as a junior, will become the second member of his family to play college football. An older brother, Ike, played wide receiver at Texas State University in San Marcos.

"I believe it will be a good place for me to spend my next four years," said Chekwa, who plans to go into the biological science field. "There will be a good chance for me to play because they have a couple of cornerbacks who are thinking about going into the NFL."

Shaw said the fact that Jackson and Chekwa already have committed to NCAA Division I-A colleges is a nice reflection on the East Ridge program.

"It is a testimony to how hard these kids have worked," Shaw said. Both "are going to major programs, teams that are ranked in the top 10 in the nation and playing in the BCS [Bowl Championship Series]."
