BP Awards: Boston-Carter (Best Receiver)
Believe it or not, Oregon State almost had two winners in the BP Awards. However, Notre Dame's Jeff Samardzija edged out OSU's Mike Hass, even though Hass had five more first-place votes. Congratulations, Jeff, on winning the first annual Boston-Carter Trophy as the nation's best receiver (now just make sure to drop plenty of passes in the Fiesta Bowl!).
Jeff Samardizija (Notre Dame) - 231 (15) Mike Hass (Oregon State) - 214 (20) Dwayne Jarrett (Southern Cal) - 205 (5) Santonio Holmes (Ohio State) - 180 (9) Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech) - 82 (6) Derek Hagan (Arizona State) - 47 (1) Greg Jennings (Western Michigan) - 37 Martin Nance (Miami of Ohio) - 28 (2) Jason Hill (Washington State) - 24 Demetrius Williams (Oregon) - 19 Garrett Mills (Tulsa) - 14 Chad Jackson (Florida) - 13 Sidney Rice (South Carolina) - 12 Greg Lee (Pitt) - 11 (1) Tyrone Prothro (Alabama) - 9 Billy Pittman (Texas) - 7 Maurice Stovall (Notre Dame) - 7 Jason Avant (Michigan) - 6 (1) Jovon Bouknight (Wyoming) - 6 D'Juan Woods (Oklahoma State) - 5 Dorien Bryant (Purdue) - 3 Ryan Grice-Mullen (Hawaii) - 3 Vernon Davis (Maryland) - 3 Jarrett Hicks (Texas Tech) - 3 Steve Smith (Southern Cal) - 3 Charles Sharon (Bowling Green) Davone Bess (Hawaii) - 2 Ryne Robinson (Miami of Ohio) - 2 Hank Baskett (New Mexico) - 2 Jeff Webb (San Diego State) - 2 Shaun Herbert (Northwestern) - 2 David Anderson (Colorado State) - 1 Marcedes Lewis (UCLA) - 1 Brandon Williams (Wisconsin) - 1 As you can see, the voting here was very close, with 3 players receiving (ouch!) over 200 points, and another earning 180. BTW, Santonio Holmes also had 12 second-place votes to go along with his 9 firsts. Last edited by LordJeffBuck; 12-09-2005 at 01:58 PM. |

The top 7 guys all had great seasons. There were good choices at WR.

This one was really hard for me. So many talented players stepping up this year. And then some with lesser natural ability proving what hard work can do.
Great list. Certainly can't argue with the seasons the top five or so had. |

And then I looked at the first posting a second time.... how can this be the Boston - Carter Award from the school that gave the world Paul Warfield?

it's hard to make a case that jeff s wasn't just as big for ND, cinci. plus holmes didn't hold for the kicker :-p
at osu... warfield was a hb, right? |

Woody moved him around from Halfback to wideout. When Wisconsin came to town, ranked number 1, and had the combination of Ron Van Der Kellen to Pat Richter, Woody put Warfield on the All American receiver, Reichter. Paul shut him down the whole game. |

looking at his stats, he led the team in receptions in 62 & 63 with 8 and 22 catches. I think that explains why this isn't the paul warfield award.

I think Holmes is the best WR in the country. However, I'd vote for Hass b/c of the ridiculous numbers he put up.
