Anyone know what the Big 10 rankings as a whole are?
I'm guessing that Northwestern is probably first, and that Michigan State is probably last, but I'd like to see how the numbers fall... |

For one, I'm glad to see progress at tOSU in academics. Any progress. There is nothing wrong with expecting athletes to complete school work effectively. But it is disturbing to note we are still roughly ninth among eleven in many of these elements.
Frankly, I do not understand why we are that relatively low. I do note a trend toward recruiting better students, particularly in the football program, perhaps by coach Matta as well. Like most fans I suspect, I am bemused by the difficulty in getting academically marginal athletes enrolled at tOSU, but I cannot argue that ninth place, plus or minus, does not justify higher enrollment standards. I hope they work, and that the overall programs do not suffer. Go Bucks! |

I am really surprised at those ratings also. I thought OhioState would be around 3rd or 4th. Northwestern has always ruled in the academics part
I figured Michigan would be 2nd. And Ohio State 4th. I'll bet JT is not happy with those figures. |

It will be a few more years.....
before we see the impact Tressel has had on our graduation rates based off of this type of report. This data was for students who had enrolled between 1995 and 1998. The students who enrolled as late as 1998 were were in school three years prior to the hiring of Coach Tressel.

Can anyone shed some light on how the transfers/early NFLers, or the flunk-outs affect the graduation rates? Obviously the flunk-outs hurt, as an athlete will go to a DII school before they return to OSU (anyone remember someone flunking out and returning, except a Prop 48?)
I seem to remember that the transfers count against graduation rates, as do the early entries, unless they graduate within six years of entry. Under Cooper, the hype was come to OSU, and we'll get you ready for the Show in three years, and we had a ton of people that left early. So yeah, Tres is paying the piper for Cooper's stuff. He's now recruiting good students, what the 2002 class had a gpa of over 3.0! But from my own experience, HS academics doesn't translate to college classes (Miami University 1971), (MBA OSU 1976). Just looking at the MBA rankings, OSU is around 7th out of 11. With all the colleges OSU has, as well as the automatic entry into the school, I'd think that the graduation rate for the entire school would be lower, ergo the athletes would show up 'better'. Don't know, but am very glad to see that OSU is bringing up the academic part. PS, does anyone know how far back the relating goes? I remember the 'Killer" Macon, Greg Simpson class lost 100% of the recruits within a three yar period. That's gotta hurt. But my grey hair indicates that I don't remember the years it happened. ![]() |

For anyone whining about us shying away from kids with questionable academics, just re-read the first post. Being near the bottom of the conference won't cut it. Granted, under Tressel we've had the most Academic All-Conference selections of any school, and the only way to maintain that and to offset the past performance under the previous regime is to keep to standards tougher. It's only in our best interest. |
