I think that he has a clause in his contract that if he gets the team to the NC game, he gets a pretty hefty bonus (six figures).

If he wins it this year though, another raise wouldn't surprise me in the least. Two NCs in 6 years bring a lot of personal capital. Sure hope it happens.

CHAMPS HIT CAMP Ohio State's Jim Tressel attended Cardinal Mooney football coach P.J....<!-- BITSHeadlineEnd -->

By JOHN KOVACH
<uppercase>VINDICATOR SPORTS STAFF</uppercase>
<uppercase>T'S GREAT FOR LITTLE KIDS," </uppercase>said<uppercase> </uppercase>Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel in describing the annual Cardinal Mooney Football Camp of Champions that opened Monday at the Mooney Athletic Complex in Youngstown.
"For many kids, it's their first look at football and coaches. They are having a lot of fun and they get to play some football," added Tressel, the former Youngstown State coach who used his first day of vacation to attend his first Mooney camp.
The camp for students from grades four through eight, sponsored by The DeBartolo Corporation (Denise and John York), attracted some 300 kids and a host of other prominent area collegiate football coaches, including several from Mooney.
"The coaches' roots are here and for many of the kids it's their first impression of the coaches," said Tressel who served as a clinician at the camp along with his counterparts. "It gives kids a chance to become interested in football and they get to learn some of the fundamentals."
Tressel's opinions about the camp were echoed by other coaches tutoring kids for the 8:30-11:30 a.m. session, which will be repeated today to climax the two-day camp.
How Pelini sees it
Bo Pelini, a Mooney graduate who is defensive coordinator at Louisiana State, said the camp inaugurates kids into what organized football is like.
"The kids are getting the right message as to what it requires to be a player," Pelini said. "Hopefully they will pick up a few things [and] get to know some of the kids out here. They are learning about commitment and doing a good job [and] going out there and participating."

But I'm not concerned when it will come. You have to work at the job you are doing and you have to focus on it and do the best you can."
<!-- 48 --></center> Durkin's view
D.J. Durkin, a Boardman High and Bowling Green State graduate and now an assistant coach for the Falcons, said the camp is a treat for kids and coaches alike.
"For the kids, this is unbelievable [to be around these coaches]," Durkin said. "These are some of the best coaches in the country. And it's great for me. We [coaches] bounce a lot of ideas off each other."
Durkin, who is coaching linebackers and special teams at Bowling Green, said that he maintains ties with Boardman High and coach D.J. Ogilvie, also a Boardman and Bowling Green graduate.
"[Ogilvie] brought his seniors on the team up [to Bowling Green] for spring practice this year," Durkin said. "They attended team meetings and watched the team practice."
Beck's observations
Tim Beck, another Mooney graduate who is an assistant coach at Kansas, said students at the camp get a chance to see other area people who are succeeding, and hopefully they will get the idea.
"They get to see some local stars, people who have had success. These people can serve as role models for the kids because they could see others who have made it from their area," said Beck, who jumped from high school coaching in Arizona to Kansas to work under coach Mark Mangino, a native of New Castle and a former YSU assistant coach.
Heacock stresses academics
Youngstown State coach Jon Heacock (West Branch High) closed the session with an interesting talk about the importance of academics and proper attitude to all of the camp kids inside the Mooney gym.
"I encourage all of you to get into good habits in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades because the NCAA has increased its academic standards," Heacock said. "You have to have more math and English. You are now going to have to get more academic achievement than any previous classes before you.
"You have to come to school every day and not be late," Heacock advised. "There are [almost] no excuses. It's all on your report card. So get to class and be on time."
And he emphasized, " Academics are the most important."

Sporting News

On the offensive
June 28, 2006
Is there a better big-game coach than Jim Tressel?
I think not.
Why? Because he's not afraid to think outside his sweater vest.
Big games with Texas, Penn State, Iowa and Michigan lurk. And so might a national title.
I think 1,000 more Ted Ginn jerseys were just sold. Oh, and I know Brutus' heart is beating a little faster, too, after reading that.
No doubt, this is the biggest season at Ohio State since . . . well, since last year. Hey, it's like this every year in Columbus. OK, maybe the hype-o-meter is registering two ticks past "berserk" instead of just one tick. Now I'm gonna test the limits of the hype-o-meter: Sporting News has your Buckeyes ranked No. 2 in the nation with an 11-1 record and 8-0 Big Ten mark. (Honestly, I would have ranked OSU No. 1.)
Here's why Sporting News has given Ohio State two big scoops of love.

The offense looks incredible. No, make that stupendous. Wait, maybe it's fabulous. Forget it. I'm not gonna try to label it. I'm just gonna watch quarterback Troy Smith, Ginn, Antonio Pittman, Chris Wells and a knock-out line and let my mind drift to 1995. You remember that year, when Bobby Hoying, Terry Glenn, Eddie George, Rickey Dudley and Orlando Pace helped the Buckeye offense set the nation on its ear.
I know what you're thinking, Michigan Man: What about the Ohio State defense? There are nine starters to replace. It's been reloaded. Let me introduce you to the latest and greatest BMOCs: linebackers Larry Grant, Marcus Freeman and Jim Laurinaitis, tackle Quinn Pitcock, end Lawrence Grant, cornerbacks Kurt Coleman and Malcolm Jenkins and safety Jamario O'Neal.
Yeah, pretty sweet, huh?
OK, now take a deep breath, Brutus. The first "i" won't be dotted for a couple months. But it's difficult not to develop a facial twitch when thinking about how great the Tressel era has been. Let me count the ways.
ONE national title.
TWO Big Ten crowns.
THREE wins in three BCS games.
FOUR wins in five tries vs. "that school up north."
FIVE bowl appearances.
I'll stop there so you can go dig out your buckeye necklace and No. 45 jersey. (What am I thinking? You probably already have them on!) You have some dreaming to do.

That Sporting News guy (Tom Dienhart) got so excited he called Lawrence Wilson by the wrong last name.

the funny thing is, I was getting so excited just reading this authors words that I completely missed that until I had to go back over and read it lol

I think SOME people might be getting carried away with our offense though. Lets be honest, we have the ABILITY and the PLAYERS to have the best offense in the nation. But lets not forget who's calling the shots, Jim Tressel(this is NOT a knock). In the mid 90's we would score and score and score some more without hesitation. However, under Tressel its been very clear that he is more comfortable sitting on a good lead than taking his chances at making huge mistakes and letting a team back into the game.

We will probably have one of the top offenses in the nation for sure, but I dont think the stats/scores will tell that tail.

Good call Magua...

Though by SOME people, I think we have to be talking about talking heads, and not Buckeye fans on this site. Those here know that our offense was better last year than we showed against most of the teams on the latter half of our schedule.

But when Tressel thinks the other team is going to score, like at Minnesota or Notre Dame, our offense puts up numbers.

We could have laid 100 on Illinois or Northwestern if we'd been so inclined.

Bear in mind also that Tressel milks the clock on every possession of the game. This holds down our number of plays and, over the course of a season, our number of possessions.
