Sunday Special: Tressel takes it like a coach
Sunday, January 13, 2008
BY Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER
In the days after Ohio State?s burial in the bayou, fans sent e-mails asking the same question.
Just after how in the world did that happen ? we?ll get to that ? was the question asking how Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel was handling the loss. To explain this, fans need to understand that Tressel does not hold losses ? or wins ? in the same perspective as most. He can?t afford to. Otherwise, Ohio State wouldn?t be a top 10 program, and Tressel wouldn?t be the coach of it.
Think of it this way: If you had a great day at work, how long could you afford to live in that moment? Conversely, if you had the worst day at work, how long could afford to wallow in it? You had better move on, or you?re not going to have a job very long.
Tressel isn?t handling the loss like a man. He isn?t handling it like a fan.
He is, however, handling it like a coach. That?s what he is paid well to do. It is clear OSU needs better players to keep up with the SEC. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program.

Of that list of teams, Illinois is the only one of them that finished below #3 in the national rankings.
Yeah, we stink. We need to recruit better players and get better coaches because the best of the best can actually beat us. We went up against one of the best defensive lines I've ever seen and didn't totally man-handle them. Boo-freakin-hoo, I think I'll go slit my wrists.

Anyone remember the perception of Tom Osborne going into the 94 season?
He was too conservative, his offense wasn't "modern" enough, he was behind the times, he'll never win a national title...blah blah blah.
Most coaches NEVER get to play on the national stage let alone three times in six years.
JT may not be perfect, but he's doing something right.

I'm not one to bash any Buckeye, not even a former coach. But it is hard not to compare this coach to his immediate predecessor.
How many Buckeyes turned down 1st-round-money during the previous "administration"?
We've had more guys than that turn down 1st-round-money THIS YEAR.
What kind of leadership does it take to create an environment that YOUNG men prefer to remain in rather than to leave and become millionaires?

DBB, I was going to post something similar in the "who would you not want your kid to play for thread" We as fans of tOSU have been blessed by coaches who showed true concern and love for their players. Woody was in a class of his own as you'd be hard pressed to hear any of his players say anything bad about him. Coach Bruce although not a great recruiter had his players playing their hearts out for him against scUM his last year, a sure sign of their respect and love for him.
Bruce's successor and JT predecessor while a good human being and outstanding recruiter did not seem to garner such respect.
And now with Jim Tressel, we see another coach who's players seem to love and respect at levels approaching Woodyesque.
Seeing some of the fellows ND and TSUN fans have had to endure and are still enduring, or just starting to, makes me glad I was born into a family where love for our Buckeyes was not only encouraged but nearly demanded.
