COLUMBUS When Jim Tressel decides he's done coaching football, he may shed his sweater vest for a professor's robe. The Ohio State head football coach's revamped contract, which makes him the highest paid coach in the Big Ten at about $3.5 million a season, also calls for Ohio State to provide him with a faculty position.
According to Tressel, Athletics Director Gene Smith approached him over the summer about a raise in the deal that goes through the 2012 season. The new contract doesn't change in length.
"There was no negotiation," Tressel said. "No discussion. All I said was, 'Wow.' "
So what's the coach going to teach?
"I was certified to teach math coming out of college, but I couldn't even help my kids when they were in the fourth grade," Tressel joked. "People always ask, what would you be doing if you weren't doing this? My answer is always, 'I'd be teaching.' That's what I love to do."

Tressel will make about $600,000 more this season. What are his plans for the money?

Think Tressel is setting up a nice seamless transition into teaching down the road? I do. Particularly after reading his book. The man clearly loves football, but I believe he loves instructing young people even more. This is why you'll never see him in the NFL.

That was good, but then after that he said, in a more serious tone, something like "hopefully be able to give it away".
Pretty cool.
