Tressel trotted out the complete 2nd team OL vs Texas early in the game, and scored. That OL had less talent than the 2nd team OL will when Hall enrolls. I can certainly see JT bringing back that approach to season the backups, but more importantly, lighten the grind of the season on the starters. If he did that in the enormous game vs Texas, you'd think he'd be willing to do so against some lesser teams as well. Last year's OL was marred by injuries, leaving the 2nd team full of walkons.

Oops, Good catch on Cordle and Browning.

I still want to allow JT and JB to make the case that early PT is neither impossible nor even unlikely, so I say they use Rehring and Boone as the "examples" of frosh that contributed early.

2004 (Freshman): Enrolled at the start of Winter Quarter in January and took part in winter conditioning and spring drills ... moved into the No. 2 spot at left tackle behind Robbie Sims once the coaches took off his redshirt ... made his college debut in week seven against Indiana ... played significant minutes the next two weeks against Penn State and Michigan State and started the latter for the injured Rob Sims ... his development allowed Sims to move inside to guard from time-to-time depending on the Buckeyes' needs ... third among the freshmen in playing time behind Ted Ginn Jr. and Antonio Pittman ... earned his first letter.

Alex Boone:

2005 (Freshman): Played in 11 of the Buckeyes' 12 games for a total of 126 minutes ... Texas is the only game he did not play in ... took over for Barton at Penn State and started the Michigan State, Indiana and Minnesota games the next three weeks ... logged 30 minutes in a hard-fought win at Minnesota.

Browning also received a lot of PT in his freshman year.
I agree that it will be difficult to break into the starting line up with the "stocked OL" next year, but based on past history I believe JT and JB can build the case that deserving freshman should not think it impossible or even unlikely to see significant minutes or opportunities to contribute early.

Pretty sure both Cordle and Browning redshirted their freshmen years...

Cordle had an ankle injury that kept him out, or he probably would have played as a true freshman, but not start.

The last OT to start the season as a true freshman at tOSU was Pace...Right?

From what I get Newsome is excited about OSU , Fellows (Halls close friend) decommitted from Illinois and committed to tOSU and Hall has yet to recieve an offer from USC. So I still LOVE our chances but think Ginn's policy is making this hard on us (me) mentally.

I will probably be in the minority but I like Hall at RT more than Shugarts at this time last year.

I kind of agree with this as well, but it has more to do with my feeling that Shugarts has the potential to be a much more athletic Steve Rehring.

I do think one of Hall/Shugarts will be a guard eventually, and I think it will be Shugarts.

I like both about the same...I think that Shugarts is more of a mauler type that you look for at RT, that has great feet to go with his massive frame...

Hall is just a freak looking kid, he carries 300 lbs about as well as anyone could, and he is athletic as they come...I agree that one will probably play G at some point in their career for a year or two, but I think both are RT prospects...

Glad they will both be Buckeyes...

I will go against the grain and say that I think Hall will be the one to go to guard. I like both of them and they will both be great, just my opinion. Also, it depends on J.B.'s progression in pass blocking...he has the ability, he just needs some practice.

I agree. I see Hall moving inside before I see Shugarts doing it.

Talks about his visit to tOSU today as part of the Ted Ginn bus tour. Said he had a great time and came away impressed with coach Bollman. Says he's down to tOSU, USC, Michigan, Miami, Penn State & Illinois.
