I was unaware that there was any question as to who was the leader on the field in '02. If there is, then I guess you have a point.
Krenzel was a leader and there is no doubt he is a top 5 QB (Kern, Schlitcher, Germaine, Krenzel, Smith) in Ohio State history. I just think Troy Smith is better. Doss, Nickey, and Cie Grant comes to my mind as leaders. Wilhelm was definitely a leader. He called out Rambo before the 2001 Outback Bowl because of the way he earned his captain spot. Wilhelm was the one that was always interviewed in 2002. Stepanovich was a fiery leader. Peterson is another great example, I believe he led the midfield prayers after games. Will Smith showed his passion on the field. That team wouldn't have won all those close games with the leadership from those players that I mentioned.

Alright, I'm pretty new here, but I'll jump in.....

On the surface, this seems fairly easy, you gotta go Krenzel right? I mean, the NC and all, what's to discuss. If you really think about it though, things are not that obvious. We all love Krenzel, of course, he was clutch, made big plays when it mattered, was an all around good guy, and he and Troy's stats are pretty comparable at this point, and will always be one of my alltime favorites, HOWEVER.......

I went with TS because he is the better quarterback and , I think, in fact in the same conversation as a leader and clutch player. He is a far more accurate thrower (I can't help but remember how many times I screamed at the TV after CK missed a throw). TS exudes a confidence that directly affects his teammates and lead directly to the dynamic offense we've seen over the last couple of years. The 2002, 2003 offenses just rarely seemed confident or dynamic. I'll give you that the philosophy and playcalling change help TS, but I think that Troy's abilities allowed that change to occur, remember JT has always said that he builds his offense around his personnel, so something had to be there that kept him from being more agressive with CK. CK was clutch, and had a great NC game from a running stanpoint (and made the throw on 4th and 14), but I also don't think you can be much more clutch than TS has been over the last 2 years against Michigan and in the Fiesta bowl this year with his dazzling play. Throw in Troy's obvious leadership on the field (on a team that desperatey needed a leader), and I went with Troy.

No disrespect against CK, like I said he's an alltime favorite, but I think Troy is a special player who has directly lead to the offense's dramatic improvement.

When Troy's offense struggles, they lose. When Krenzel's offense put up 6 points, the D bailed them out (PSU). I'm not sure if Smith has quite reached Krenzel's level at OSU, but Krenzel did not have to do nearly as much. Based on past achievements CK may still have the edge.

However, If I had to take one QB for the upcoming season, it would be TS.

It's Krenzel, and it's not close right now. Krenzel did go 2-0 as a starter against scUM. He just finished 2-1, with an arm that was still jacked up. Troy hasn't had a shot at 3-0 yet, so we can't make that comparison. Krenzel is 2-0 in BCS games, one of them being a National Championship. He started the other game, and we lost, but Troy wasn't around for his bowl game, in his sophomore year, so we can't compare those. That makes Troy 1-0 in bowl games, vs. 2-0 for Krenzel, with the same amount of experience. Krenzel was clutch, so is Troy. The difference here is that, Krenzel didn't have the key turnovers that Troy has. Krenzel wasn't the same, after the NCSU game, because of his elbow injury. I really hope that Troy doesn't have to prove that he's better at playing through injury than Craig was. Craig has a better winning percentage, a National Championship, two BCS wins, and two wins vs. scUM. Troy may catch him by the end of next year, but until then, he has quite a bit of ground to make up.

Craig as my vote.
He won us a National Championship.
He had the only 14 game win season.
He won more BCS games.
He played in more Bowl games.
He didn't lead the team in fumbles.
He didn't fumble away the Purdue game in '04.
He didn't fumble away the PennSt. game in '05.
He didn't get suspended for taking money.
And he did it all while majoring in (and excelling in) something I can't spell.

Yes, I know the games came down to more than a fumble, but Craig so rarely fumbled compared to TS.

And jwinslow points out, when Troy's offense struggles, they lose. When Krenzel's offense struggles, the D bailed them out.
To take it a step further: when Troy struggles, the offense struggles; when Krenzel struggled, it didn't seem to affect the offense at all.

As for best pure passer, I'd have to go with Scotty.
