Walk-on Defensive End Brett Daly from Elyria discusses his position coach, Coach Heacock, his off season routine, and where he will fit in this coming year.

What has been your most memorable moment as a Buckeye?
"So far I would have to say my most memorable moment as a buckeye was the fiesta bowl this year. The atmosphere was amazing and we were treated like royalty in Tempe."

Has it always been a dream of yours to play at Ohio State? How has the level of competition compared to what you anticipated when you selected Ohio State for college?
"Growing up in Ohio I think it’s the dream of every kid who plays football in this state. I know the competition would be really tough but what surprised me most was the athletic ability of some of the guys on the team. Some of these guys just have incredible abilities."

What do you think of Coach Tressel and his performance with the program?
"Coach Tressel is a great coach and always has us prepared to play. His performance is directly related to his dedication to his players and the team."

Coach Heacock is your position coach, has his knowledge improved your overall skill level?
"When I came here I had never played defensive end before and Coach Heacock has done a great job teaching me and improving my skills. He really knows his job well and is good at passing his knowledge on to us."

What is your off-season routine to prepare for the coming year?
"My off season routine will be lifting and conditioning 4-5 times a week and working hard on increasing my size and strength and gaining speed."

Have the coaches provided insight into your role with the team this coming year?
"They have told me I have improved a lot over the last year and now that I have gained some weight and strength I have a good opportunity to show what I can do in the spring."

The offense looks ready for a repeat performance in 2006; do you see the team having a similar finish and national ranking?
"I believe as long as we keep focused and start as strong as we finished last year there is no reason why we can't finish better then last year."

BUCKEYE BUZZ:@ DL Brett Daly has a big appointment next week in Ann Arbor, Mich. No, this is the day before THAT one.

Daly, a former walk-on who was put on scholarship before this, his senior season, is interviewing to go to medical school - Michigan's medical school.

"My first interview is with Michigan on Friday of next week," he said this week. "It kind of works out good for me. I'll just go down the night before, the interview is in the morning and I'll meet up with the team right when they get there. It's really ironic they offered me the interview the day before (the Ohio State-Michigan game)."

He joked that the doctors and administrators in Ann Arbor had a master plan.

"They knew I'm on the team," he said. "They're just trying to mess with me and see if they can get in my head before the game."

Daly, an Elyria native who transferred to Ohio State from Case Western Reserve, said Michigan has 1 of the top medical schools in the country.

"If I did go there, it would be really strange," he said. "I'd still wear my Ohio State stuff."

The catch is that Daly also has applied to Ohio State's medical school.

"It'd be really tough if it came down to that (Michigan) and Ohio State," he said.

Following in the footsteps of our moderately successful and mostly forgotten Bowl Quiz, we present the first "The Quiz" in conjunction with "The Game." This was sup posed to be a head-to-head matchup that both previewed and predicted the outcome of Saturday's Ohio State- Michigan game. Unfortunately, in a week when Michigan made neither its senior quarterback nor senior running back available for interviews, our request for a quiz taker, any quiz taker, went unfulfilled.
Technically, that's a forfeit.
However, Ohio State senior defensive end Brett Daly, a former walk-on from Elyria High who earned a scholarship in the spring, was up to the task of representing the Buckeyes. He took on 10 questions, each worth 5 points, with a couple of bonus questions thrown in. Think of his final score as Ohio State's score on Saturday. If you think the Wolverines won't be able to match it, then Daly has done his job.

Even if he doesn't reach his goal of becoming an orthopedic doctor, Brett Daly has learned two valuable things in his four years as an Ohio State football player:

No. 1: When he has a gut feeling, go with it.

No. 2: He has friends in high places.

Both of those lessons, along with his customary practice of keeping his nose in his books when he wasn't practicing football, helped Daly move closer toward his goal. The former walk-on defensive lineman, who played primarily on special teams, will be a starter in medical school at Ohio State this fall.

"Following my gut is what brought me to Ohio State in the first place," said Daly, an Elyria native who tried Case Western for a semester before transferring to OSU in the spring of 2004. "Past experience and, again, following my gut is what's going to keep me here for med school."

Late in November, it looked like Daly was headed to the University of Michigan medical school. He interviewed with the screening board at Michigan the day before he and the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines in Ann Arbor for a fourth straight time. Several days later, he received a letter saying he'd been accepted.

It was a hallelujah moment because even if the Wolverines are OSU's rivals on the field, Michigan's med school has long been considered one of the top 15 in the nation. Plus, he had interviewed for acceptance to Ohio State's med school but was placed on the deferred list.

That's where the friends in high places came into play. OSU coach Jim Tressel long has been a fan of Daly, whose limited playing time belied his effort and focus.

"Brett Daly is the ultimate student-athlete, willing to do whatever his team needed," Tressel said. "His unselfishness and willingness to sacrifice will make him a superb physician."

Plus, Tressel wanted it known that Daly had been accepted by Michigan, "the team up north."

He was a student in my class a couple of years back, and all I can say is that he was a very good student! It is no surprise to me that he has got multiple offers to med school! Good luck to you Brett!
