Again, we can talk scheme all day but if the OL does not have the technique, discipline, or fundamental understanding of adjustments...it is all for jack.

I have said in a couple other threads that the O-line has been the weak point in our teams under JT. I cant say what JT will do or should do, but I will say that if I was the head coach Bollman would get 1 more year (end of 2005) to try to fix things, if we are still average or bellow average then he needs to be either replaced or supplemented. Just my Opinion.

Although OSU doesn't use Zone Blocking all through the game it does seem to be effecting the technique of the O-line and the players. Top that off with a clear lack of communication and lack of executing the technique, and you got what we are seeing today with OSU. That blame can be put on both coaching and the kids. In the kids defense though they are only 18-21. Being an O-linemen and D-linemen all throughout my career, I watch the linemen almost all game (I know boring haha). I never liked the Zone blocking because it isn't agressive enough at times and it leaves too much room for error on who to block and when. That crap they are doing with the first step East or west and then decide to fire out and into people SUCKS . Supposedly Zone blocking is implimented to disguise run plays but obviously that does not seem to be working either. hehe OSUgrad21, I give you credit for defending Bollman this long haha. I still have the faith though but some major adjustments need to be made. Hopefully before Wisconsin.

This is exactly why we should man up and drive off the line. Why in the world would OSU try to disguise run plays?!? We love to run the ball and everyone knows it. IMO, zone blocking takes away some aggression that is vital for an O-lineman. Give me the straight ahead, fire out hard and low, make first contact and drive the defender back and possibly get some LB's caught up in the muck, over what we are currently seeing any day of the week. And then throw some passes off of plays that are disguised to look like a run play.
I have felt that since Bollman has been here that we have seen a steady deterioration of our Oline play. This year, with an entire line comprised of his type of recruit on the line, I thought maybe things would be different. But as Grad has pointed out, schemes really mean jack shit if one doesn't have the basics, proper technique, discipline, and understanding of adjustments.

When did Bollman have success at the 1-AA level? Jim Tressel didn't win his first National Championship until 1991 - the year after Bollman left for Virginia. |

Guys, it's not really zone blocking under Bollman.

He has the O-L take a step opposite to the direction the are going to go, then come back into the direction needed. It gives the OL leverage both from a balance and a force perspective. This is a fairly common technique. It fails when the line does not all move at once and causes the RB to take extra steps comming to the line. |
