One of my favorites was a player that didn't even play, a walkon OG by the name of John Bates. I just remember during the 00-01 season he spent the games pumping up the crowd. If we had enough points on the board you could hear the players begging the coaches to put him in.

I have a framed cover of sports illustrated with Bob White on it. I didn't know much about him when I bought it, but it is a great photo for my Buckeye collection.

OSU>michigan is a Buckeye prospectOSU>michigan is a Buckeye prospectOSU>michigan is a Buckeye prospectOSU>michigan is a Buckeye prospectOSU>michigan is a Buckeye prospect
Tons of great ones but mine comes down to one guy

The reason I am a Buckeye fan is Cornelius Greene...when I was little I loved that name and loved the Buckeyes as a result. When I got to the point of entering college, OSU was my first choice but unfortunately not my affordable choice being out of state. Since I had to pay much of my way to school, I had to settle for Slippery Rock ...a PA state school as close to OHIO as possible . Some others that rank higher on my list, Spielman, Pete Johnson, Pace, Gradishar, Wilhelm, Doss, Byars (still see him running wild without his shoe), George, Tomczak, Todd Bell, John Frank, Rickey Dudley, Cris Carter, Holmes, Hawk, Carpenter, Mangold, Bentley . I am sure that I am missing some in my quick attempt to list some. Certainly the obvious Archie is up there as well...has to be on anyone's list.
As for Clarett...I don't consider him a real Buckeye...he wore the uniform but not for the school...for himself ONLY and of course E$PN.

Iam going to have to go with Andy Kaztenmoyer. I live in Philadelphia so there is no real college football here and when i was growing up i played linebacker so who better to have introduce u to the sport. People still ask me all the time how i can live in philly and worship the BUCKEYES and the answer is always the same BIG KAT

Carlos Snow
Greg Frey (my friend's uncle, went to the same high school)
Steve Tovar

More recently...
Eddie, Pace, AJ, Nugent, and Gamble

Which issue of SI (or maybe another magazine) do you have? I could only find this cover with TBDTITL when searching for SI covers of OSU football in the late 1950's.

Excellent call! Greene along with Spielman and Cris Carter are my favorite 'oldtimers'.

As for the current team, I love them all. But if I could only pick one, I would go with Troy Smith. That kid has had so much pressure put on him (mostly of his own doing) and has grown up and matured that he is the unquestioned leader of the team. He has become a man and embodies the spirit of being a Buckeye...

of course, a 3-0 record against scUM and ND doesn't hurt either.

my picks

Okay, I may duplicate SOME of your picks, but I think I have a few that have not been mentioned yet:

Gary Williams: great, great clutch receiver. The "Carter Scott" of OSU football. Had the OSU career reception record for awhile.

Larry Zelina: wingback, 60's version of Teddy G, Jr. He could take the reverse handoff, take the pitch, or go over the middle and pick up a first down reception.

Ray Griffin: THE interception against Michigan. Also, a good NFL career, actually better than Archie's.

Scottie Graham: what a pounder...

Nick Buonamici: just to see him on Woody's TV show was worth it. Nick wore his Afro and his gold chains. High-larious!

Dave Foley and Rufus Mayes: great dependable OT's.

Jim Otis: personified the old style.

and finally, Ron Maciejowski: the guy no-one remembers. He was the passing QB Woody would bring in to spell Rex Kern when we needed to get some yardage, or when the running game wasn't working. He liked to throw to Bruce Jankowski ---- Pole to Pole!

Peace out! Go Bucks!!!!!!!!!

Past- Archie or Cassidy
present- T Smith- Think he is my favorite of all time though just because he is from cleveland. And he holds the record for most yards againts scUM.

I'll try to keep it to a half-dozen that I've seen play live - but that's almost impossible.

Archie
Gradishar
Tatum
Pace
Cousineau
Warfield (admittedly I never saw him play live for the Bucks, but he was one of my all time faves from watching him with the Browns)

The two former players that I admire the most as people:
Archie
Rex Kern

However, the best reciever that played for us IMO would be Michael Jenkins. He holds the record for all-time recieving yardage and was a force during his tenure at OSU, with a great demeanor on and off the field. Stayed humble and never was involved with the law. Shame he never made All-American during his 2002 or 2003 campaigns.

While those players made marks on the season, others established themselves in the OSU career record books.
  • Santonio Holmes – 2nd in OSU history with 182 career receptions
  • Santonio Holmes1st in OSU history with 3,076 career yards
  • A.J. Hawk – 4th in OSU history with 496 career tackles

I just saw this yesterday. I never realized he broke the record. I thought it was going to take him his senior year to do it

EDIT: That can't be right? He's never had more than a 1000 recieving in one season, according to ESPN.com

What am I missing here?

I had that wrong - it is the cover of Street and Smith's Football Yearbook for 1958. Sorry about that.
