Legitimate questions...and here is the answer as best as I can tell...taking Ben this year means
OSU does not have to take one of each next year. Ben is good enough to eventually punt, kickoff and handle the FG duties. By taking Ben this year, he can redshirt next year and be the team's punter in 2009 when Trapasso is gone. He will handle those duties for two years until Pettrey has graduated and then can take over the kickoff and FG duties during his redshirt junior and senior seasons.
Having gone back and looked at how this class could fill out and taking into account how good Ben is (maybe the top overall kicking prospect in the nation) I think it is very smart to take him this year and not have to worry about either spots next year. Waiting until next year would have meant having to take one of each, neither of which might be as good as Ben is. I know people are worried about the small number of 'ships available this year but I think he will be closer to 18-19 when it is all said and done. And you can't pass on a kid with this kind of talent, especially not when JT puts so much emphasis on special teams.
