Who Will Step Forward and be a Leader?
With all the talk about stepping up, and 'geling' there has to be a leader or leaders on each side of the ball. Without this leadership, then there will be no team. On the D last year, the LBs were clearly the leaders, and on the O, maybe Mangold and ?

The loss of great players hurts, but great programs (OSU is a top 5 program) has the senior leadership to kick the underclass butts in spring conditioning, organize the sprints, and generally set the tone by example.

Who do you believe will be the leaders on Offense? Defense?

Troy Smith and Quinn Pitcock probably will be the two biggest leaders.

EDIT: Downing is also a very vocal guy on the offensive line.

I think B Mitch will lead the defense, he is a very smart kid back there in the defensvie backfield.

Smith is the obvious leader of the offense.

My guess for captains are Smith, Downing, Mitchell, JRich.

Everyone knows that T. Smith is the man, But what about a voice on defense that we have never heard like D'andrea. I think he steps it up big this year and finally shows everyone why he was so highly recruited on the field and in the lockeroom.

I agree about D'Andrea. Though, I don't want to know why he was recruited in the lockerroom. A 5th-year guy, he knows the system, and knows what the coaches want out of a linebacker. I guess I don't know much about D'Andrea, specifically, but generally, the other players would be wise to look to a 5th-year guy to help them out.

Speaking of that, is there a vbet on who will be captains next year?

Dunno if there is, but it seems like there should be.

Offense will definitely by Troy and one of the OL...I'd put my vCash on Downing, but who knows.

On Defense, I honestly have no idea...I think there'll be a younger guy getting one of the positions, but I don't know who

In my little mind there is no question about Troy Smith on O.

On D I have to go with a personnel favorite; John Kerr. John walked on with NO chance of ever winning a scholarship. He also stuck with it through some tough times.

I'm hoping he shines for us as he has done elsewhere. As a HS senior at Cleveland St Ignatius he won D-1 defensive player of the year. John led his team to the state title game with 199 tackles and 12 sacks.

At Indiana John recorded 119 tackles as a freshman. This was with [censored] for a D-line in front of him to keep blockers off him. Normally safety's are the leading tacklers on bad defenses not linebackers who have to fight blocks and try and make tackles. I wish John all the success in the world.

Who's going to show Leadership?
I believe I agree with Troy on offense. There will need to be an O-lineman to get that group moving. Downing? possibly, Datish? maybe? Someone needs to step up, because there is an axiom, "the team's fortunes lie with the success or failure of the O-line and the D-line." I think the wide receivers will be motivated by Tony G... Roy Hall and even Teddy do not impress me with 'vocal' leadership skills, they do it by example, but will that be enough? Who works with the young'uns on their routes when the coaches are not around?

On the D, that is the million dollar question, and I believe the key to OSU playing in the Rose for the National Championship. I see D'Andrea working his fanny off to excel, as this is his ONLY chance to impress the pros (since he burned his medical year for ...what, three plays? (Just guessing, but it wasn't many). The mighty Quinn to me is a blue collar guy that does his job without a whole lotta fuss ...again, leading by example, but not as vocal. Patterson has been in and out, knows all the positions, but I don't know if he can motivate others. The rest of the D-line is YOUNG, and looking for a leader. Quinn will have to step up, or one of the young-uns will have to fill the void.

Linebacker, someone mentioned Kerr. Does he have enough respect among the backers to have them listen? Freeman has been listening to the magnificent trio that just graduated, so maybe he will lead by example and vocalization. But at the end of the day, I think the 'backers will motivate themselves.

The D-backs are the weak spot. Talented to be sure, but unproven. Mitchell, who I understand got up last year and motivated the team, is probably the front runner to be the leader, although it would be much better to have that leader on the field. Jammo, seems to be more the quiet type, but I believe he will develop leadership skills as he matures.

You guys/gals that get to go see practices, or read more of 'what's happening' at practices have a much better idea than I. Threads like these help me get a better feeling about the 'belly of the beast'. thanks.
