"Top Senior" / NFL Lists (Is Troy Smith an NFL QB?)

He just showed his picks for the top seniors for college football next year, with golden-boy Brady Quinn being #1, and his receiver Jess Samardzija also making the top 10.

Of course, Troy Smith is apparently not worth of being one of the Top 10 seniors. Somehow, it doesn't really hurt considering this is the guy who looked like a retard with his picks on draft day .

I think it was based on pro prospects and right now Smith is not a top 10 senior in terms of pro potential.

I don't know about Samardzija, I would question his speed, he is good, but top 10 is too high IMO.

Overall I didnt think it was a good looking list, but it is way to early to try and rate these guys already.

I have my doubts about Smith as a top 10 pick. Size wise, he isn't a prototypical pro QB. That will affect him in the draft.

you're the one looking like a retard saying that at this point Troy Smith is a top #10 draft pick.

I believe those picks were for players that have pro potential for their current position.

I don't believe Troy will be a QB in the pros. I think if anything, he will be a WR, like Michael Robinson from PSU switching to WR.

Can anyone dig up his Top Ten Seniors from this time in 2005?

I think that would make a fascinating example of just how futile it is to name your flavors of the month, April 2007, in April of 2006.

Troy isn't fast enough (right now) to be an NFL receiver...

I believe even in last years list, AJ was in the top-5. Along with Bush, Young and Lienart(sp?).

ok... we'll see next spring. He may not be a top-10 pick due to size, but he won't be switching positions.

Here was the cnnsi variety of the top10 last spring:

I think that would make a fascinating example of just how futile it is to name your flavors of the month, April 2007, in April of 2006.
From last April:

Quote:
TOP 10 SENIORS
1. Matt Leinart, QB, USC: A tremendously efficient quarterback who sees the entire field and makes good decisions with the ball. Leinart has excellent pocket awareness and is precise with his ball placement, allowing receivers to make the most of the catch.
2. D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia: The consummate left tackle. Ferguson has long arms and great position technique, which allow him to control defensive ends in pass protection and move them in run blocking. He could stand to add a little weight to his frame, but Ferguson has no other real deficiencies.
3. Chad Greenway, OLB, Iowa: A tough, aggressive player who has tremendous size for an outside linebacker. Greenway's athleticism and sideline-to-sideline speed allow him to get to the ball quickly, making him one of the most productive defensive players in the nation.
4. DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis: His great instincts, balance and feet allow him to get through traffic. Williams can catch the football out of the backfield as well as any back, something that contributed to more than 20 touchdowns last season.
5. A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State: A starter since the first game of his college career, Hawk is a rough, tough linebacker who does a great job locating the ball and getting to where the action is.
6. Marcus McNeill, OT, Auburn: An enormous bookend, McNeill is 6-foot-8, 340 pounds, and can totally eliminate defensive linemen. His combination of size and athleticism is impressive.
7. Eric Winston, OT, Miami: The former tight end has turned himself into an impressive left tackle prospect. If Winston can recover successfully from a knee injury suffered last season, he has a chance to be a great offensive lineman.
8. Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Boston College: One of the most productive ends in the country last season. Kiwanuka has tremendous natural ability and pass-rush instincts, and if he can become more consistent from game to game and series to series, he will only get better.
9. Rodrique Wright, DT, Texas: Started as a freshman and has been a force at times along the interior. Wright is another lineman, though, who needs to develop more consistency to maximize his potential.
10. Jimmy Williams, CB, Virginia Tech: A former safety who moved to corner last season, Williams has a rare combination of size and speed. His 6-2½, 215-pound frame is a great tool against big wideouts, and Williams can make plays in coverage and run support.

Overall wasnt too bad for being a year in advance. The only guy that terribly dropped was Wright and I have heard different reasons for that like off the field and on the field.

LOL - you know me too well, I came here to skewer Kiper not to praise him

Thanks to methomps for the list.

Looks like he has a pretty poor ratio on that crystal ball looking 12 months out. Though I could call the omission of Young telling, in truth at this time last year no-one including Young was thinking he would do anything less than be a good Mack Brown recruit and come back for his senior year.

That said though, the ONLY call he gets absolutely right is A.J. Hawk at #5, even then it follows his over-valuation of Chad Greenway. Blind pig, acorn.
Now, where are all those NC State players?

To be fair to Kiper, the list is of top seniors, so Young and Bush would not be on it.
