No because Aaron Pettrey was supposed to be a redshirt last year and ended up getting his redshirt waved due to playing in the last few games of the year.

There are two types of redshirt- regular, and medical. To get a regular redshirt, you cannot play in a single play for the entire season. If a player doesn't play in a play for an entire season, he is automatically given redshirt status, he doesn't have to apply or anything.

To get a medical redshirt, you have to have play in 25% or less (rounding up, so 4 if your team plays 13 games) and cannot play past the first half of the season. You must apply to get a medical redshirt.

If Mike were to miss the entire season recovering from injury, he would first use up his regular redshirt. If he were to come back for the last 4 games, he would lose both the regular and the medical redshirt.

Coaches are being very conservative with Adams' injury and that is probably the best thing for big Mike right now. Apparently, it was something lingering from high school and got worse. Would love to see all the Brew Crew get some game experience this year, but that may just not be possible.

Dublin Coffman product and OSU freshman tackle Mike Adams is expected to have surgery soon on a troublesome shoulder.

Jim Lachey had a fine career at Ohio State -- an all-Big Ten, All-American career, good enough to be the 12th pick in the 1985 NFL draft. Now imagine how good he could have been with a healthy right shoulder.
Lachey said he suffered a torn rotator cuff as a senior at St. Henry High School in 1980 but kept quiet about it for five years.
"I was scared to have it operated on," Lachey said. "I didn't want (OSU) to pull my scholarship."
It wasn't until after his rookie season with the San Diego Chargers, in January 1986, that he finally went under the knife.
That's the mind-set of an offensive lineman, to gut things out.
And that's why even though the shoulder injury that OSU freshman tackle Mike Adams suffered last week was serious, offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said Adams could have kept playing had the injury occurred during the season.

Makes one wonder, if he had come forward with this injury after HS and had the surgery sooner, would his chances to contribute to the team in a more significant way this fall been much better? Given his potential, I am sure the coaches would not have pulled his scholarship.

In any case, hope he recovers fully and is stronger for it in the long run.

That's the way it works for a 'regular' redshirt year, as opposed to a 'medical' redshirt.

It's true, but only for one year. A guy who never plays doesn't get an indefinite number of non-medical redshirts seasons, he gets one non-medical redshirt season, and the rest of the seasons, non-playing or otherwise, use up his eligibility.

Freshman offensive tackle Mike Adams originally suffered a shoulder injury during track practice a year ago, his high school coach said yesterday. Dublin Coffman coach Mark Crabtree said Adams sustained a slight labrum tear "running into somebody while he was warming up."

Linemen recovering
Incoming freshman offensive tackle Mike Adams said yesterday that he hopes to be back in action for the start of preseason camp. Adams had surgery last Friday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

He said doctors gave him an estimated return date of mid-to-late fall camp, but he's aiming for earlier.
