I had a tobacco pipe in college. I used to go to a tobacco shop to buy different types of cigarettes and cigars. The pipe tobacco just smelled so great I had to try it. Smoked it every now and then. It did smell great.

It looks and sounds as though the Ohio State football coaches are trying to get offensive tackle Mike Adams to play tougher.

Adams, a 6-foot-8, 322-pound sophomore from Dublin Coffman who seems like the obvious choice to replace Alex Boone at left tackle, has been alternating with former tight end Andrew Miller on the first team during spring practice.

Coach Jim Tressel has said that he wants the offensive line to be nastier and more physical next season, and when offensive coordinator Jim Bollman was asked about Adams, his answer seemed to hint that Adams hasn't shown the improvement he would like to see.

"He's one of those guys who's a very good athlete," Bollman said. "They want to become a tough outfit, they want to control the line of scrimmage, and I think that's something that he's got to show us and continue working at. Because he's really a good athlete, he's a gifted athlete, but he's got to play with toughness and determination (and) old-fashioned fight."

Less Adams: Sophomore Adams is bringing less of himself to the left tackle battle. Adams said he's playing at about 300 pounds, losing 40 pounds from a year ago and then putting a little weight back on in a healthier way.

"I feel faster," Adams said. "I can move better all around. It was something I decided to do for me, just try to get my body ready and help my chances of playing this year more."

Among the things on which he needed to improve, Adams also mentioned his on-field aggression.

"One thing that makes you more aggressive is knowing what you're doing," Adams said. "I definitely know the plays better, and that allows me to play better and play harder."

Injury slowed Adams' progress
Sophomore tackle Mike Adams was just starting to get some playing time last year as a freshman, having fully recovered from a spring shoulder injury, when he suffered a foot injury against Purdue. He sat out the last five games and wasn't as advanced as many thought he would be during spring drills in April.

"That really set me back," Adams said. "I feel like that was a time where I really could've come into myself.

"I'm definitely more confident (now). I know what I'm doing a little bit more. I'm just going to try to get on the field as much as possible."

Adams is locked in a fight with former tight end Andy Miller for the starting job at left tackle.

It was getting to be a problem.

As an offensive lineman, Mike Adams? massive size had always served him well on the football field. That is until recently. At 6-foot-8 and well over 300 pounds, Adams was literally a mountain of a man by the age of 18.

Nicknamed ?Big Mike,? in high school, Adams used his size and strength to dominate opponents on his way to being named a U.S. Army All-American two years ago, but the Dublin Coffman product felt himself slowing down (literally) when he got to the college level, and not just because the competition was speeding up.

?I have lost about 40 pounds, then I put a few back on, and I'm about 300 pounds right now,? said Adams, who enters his second seaso000000067n at Ohio State. ?I feel faster, I feel like I can move better all around.?

It?s uncertain whether Adams? weight contributed to any of his injury issues last season, but he certainly did not look like the same player this spring that scouts saw when he was tabbed as one of the top offensive tackles in the country in the class of 2008.

Most were quick to blame the left tackle?s spring struggles on a lack of toughness, but carrying 30-40 pounds of extra weight would certainly throw off a player?s balance, which was something he seemed to struggle with when going against faster defensive ends like Thad Gibson and Cameron Heyward in practice.

?It was something I decided to do for me,? he said. ?To get my body right and help my chance of playing more this year.?

I don't really have a read on what's going on with Mike Adams but I wouldn't be concerned with Andy Miller sliding down to Left Guard. When Mike Brewster got "dinged" against Texas, the coaches inserted Jim Cordle at center and moved Andy Miller to LG. So obviously, Andy has experience at LG against very good competition.
