Mike was Tressels strength coach at YSU and I know coach Tressel brought him with him from YSU.
Incidently, Mike's brother Nick played quarterback for Tressel at YSU and won a Nat'l championship (if memory serves). Out of high school (Girard) , Nick signed LOI to play for OSU and then redshirted and later transfered to YSU...he was behind Joe Pickens who also transfered, Nick probably would have been our starting QB had he stayed.

girard is my old stomping ground. nick got a nc at ysu, so it's hard to complain. however, word is that mike was probably going to be the head S&C guy somewhere in '05, be it marshall or elsewhere. he was a sought after commodity.

Strength coach for OSU leaves

Allan Johnson resigned as Ohio State’s football and conditioning coach yesterday, as expected. Whether he decided to leave on his own or was encouraged is unclear.
One source close to the program who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Dispatch that Johnson was forced out.
But assistant strength coach Butch Reynolds vehemently denied that.
"It was nothing like that; that’s not accurate," Reynolds said. "Coach (Jim) Tressel and Al never bumped heads, from what I saw."
Johnson has not returned phone calls. In a release, Johnson thanked Tressel for the chance to work at OSU for the past five years and said he wanted to get out of the strength-coach business.
"At this point in my career, I would like the chance to pursue other opportunities, including getting into athletic administration, motivational speaking and consulting," Johnson said.
Tressel was complimentary of Johnson in the release.
"It was obvious to me (that) any time we took the field, we were the best-conditioned team out there," Tressel said. "Much of the credit for our success over the past five seasons goes to Al Johnson and his staff."
Johnson’s resignation is effective Aug. 31. He came to OSU in June 2001, five months after Tressel was hired.
A successor is expected to be named by early June.
Assistant Bernardo Amerson is a potential candidate, as is former OSU assistant Mike Cochran, who worked with Tressel at Youngstown State and is now strength coach at Marshall.
Reynolds’ area of expertise is speed and nutrition, and he has just one year of experience. He does not consider himself a candidate.
"I’m sure before the weekend is over with, (Tressel) will have 15 or 20 potential candidates," Reynolds said. "This is a big job."

I'm getting in on this late... didn't the Athletic department hire Butch Reynolds ( OSU track star and former world record holder in the 400) as S&C for football and all other sports? That would conform to Tressel's love for speed and I thought I read that Tressel was solidly behind the signing of Reynolds. So is Reynolds REALLY the S&C guy, or is he part of a team?... going back to an earlier post on the thread, that Tressel was giving up on strength for pure speed... speed is a product of strength though not necessarily a product of muscle mass.

The Tressel giving up strenght for speed was a joke.
When I was at the football camp, we met Reynolds. He was strickly a speed coach. He was there to teach the football players proper running techniques and how to maxiumize their speed.
I very highly doubt that Butch will take over the strength program. The deal was, he ran the speed part of the S&C program. And Johnson ran the strength part.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I was listening to Herbie yesterday and he brought up a good point. He said the strength coach was a very important asset to the team because he is allowed to see/work with the players year round opposed to coaches who cannot by NCAA ruling.

I always thought this would happen, but not this soon. Mike Cochran went to Marshall to be the head guy there and get experience. I think that he will be our head guy now. I know that I missed his glowing head during the spring game this year leading the charge on to the field. This guy is a bull. If he comes back could lead the way for his brother to someday join the staff. For those that dont know, Nick Cochran is an offensive coordinator for Girard High School and has put up some outstanding offensive numbers.
