I think Dryden has brought up the guys who are definitely on the hot seat entering the season. There is a progression to getting fired. First, it's the position coaches, then the coordinators, and, when there is no more blame to be passed on, the head man. The above names have all let well known assistants go recently. The above names all deal with rabid fan bases who are used to winning. The schools that the above names coach for, all have the financial ability to reach settlements and still hire a quality new guy. The key to the above keeping their jobs will be winning the marquee games. I don't think the fan bases of those schools will tolerate losses to certain opponents. And to keep our Texas guests happy, I'd throw Franchione onto the hot seat as well. The Aggies have a lot of money, or at least they used to, they don't like to lose, and patience is wearing thin. Makes for a very interesting upcoming football season.

Carr being a 2.5 isn't anywhere as egregious as John L. Smith being a 2.5. Realistically, Carr isn't going anywhere until after the 2007 season, when Hart and Henne leave. I expect he'll officially retire then, whether quietly forced out or not.

Now, I expect JLS to be gone if MSU doesn't make a bowl game this year. Whereas Carr is almost on the bubble, JLS is solidly there. He's a 3.5 and if not for solid athletic department support, a 4.

I almost completely agree. However, I don't think two 9-3 seasons with OSU losses would get Carr fired, assuming a decent record against Notre Dame, MSU, and bowls.

I agree. I think LLLLLoyd needs more than one more season to get canned, and I think John L. Smith could be gone by December.

Ordinarily, you may be right. But a 9-3 record (now going to a 12-game regular season) implies two losses to team other than Ohio State, with at least one of them most likely being against ND or MSU. Also, the two losses to Ohio State won't be just two losses to their hated rival...they will be the fifth-in-six and sixth-in-seven game losses respectively. I don't think Ohio State has ever won five games out of six, let alone six out of seven against Michigan. That would have to be totally unacceptable to Michigan fans and the administration.

EDIT: We did win six of seven (1957-1963) and five of six (1960-1965) under Woody Hayes.
