Best/Worst current CFB coaches (CFN, SI)
I'm totally bored w/ the discussions on the football board now, so I will throw this out-give you Top 5 college coaches-game strategy, recruiting, the whole package. I am talking current status, so Joe Pa and Burger King Bobby are off the list for this particular time.....
In no particular order other than the first 2 duking it out for the top spot 1-Bob Stoops 2-Jim Tressel 3-Jeff Tedford 4-Kirk Ferentz 5-Rich Rodriguez I gave Rodriguez the nod over Mark Richt and Tommy Tuberville b/c he has a much more difficult recruiting situation. Pete Carroll-phenomenal recruiter, and has assembled a phenomenal offensive staff and pipeline, but for having a rep as a defensive guy-his D got absolutely cornholed in the 2 biggest games last year. If Bob Petrino can keep Louisville going after Brohm and Bush are gone, he might get mentioned for this list. I always really liked Barry Alvarez, but he has retired. |

Being a ND fan I have to throw Weis in there because of what he did with Willinghams poor classes and worthless development, plus he has hit recruiting hard, great 06 class and already building an even better 07 class, Tressel definatly (although his decision of throwing damn, uh, cant remember the white qb's name for the life of me in the Texas game after Smith had the O on a roll still baffles me), Stoops and Ferentz as well... ah Zwick I remembered

![]() I almost made a big long post making fun of how none of those guys on the list have any Superbowl rings, but I didn't want to start a domer fight. |

I'll go with this list:
1. Jim Tressel 2. Bob Stoops 3. Pete Carroll 4. Tom O'Brien (BC) 5. Frank Beamer I really like Mark Richt, but he needs to get over the hump of making it to the NC game. |

It will be interesting to see what happens w/ Oklahoma in the next 3-4 years now that Mack Brown has regained recruiting control of Texas back from Oklahoma. |

If we're talking about everything -- recruiting, game day coaching, development, etc, -- then I've got to go with these 5:
Jim Tressel Mark Richt Pete Carroll Bob Stoops Mack Brown If, however, I were comprising a list on the 'potential' of a coach if he had someone elses' recruiting machine to work with, then all of a sudden it gets a lot harder to rule out guys like: Tommy Tuberville, Kirk Ferentz, Frank Beamer, Gary Patterson, Tom O'Brien, Pat Hill, Joe Novak, Mike Bellotti, Rich Rodriguez, etc ... I mean, you have to wonder, what would Glen Mason do at Ohio State if he could really build a roster of A-list prospects and isn't scratching to get the 2-star and 3-star kids to follow him to Minnesota? What could Mike Leach do if he could recruit anyone to play defense at Texas Tech? What could Pat Hill or Tom O'Brien really accomplish if they actually had better athletes than 11 of their 12 opponents? |

Im saying if he is lopping off Carroll because of what he will have next year seems like he is going very short term... as far as willingham, he never had the fire you need at a school like notre dame or ohio state,, the 06 and so far of the 07 classes of recruiting look great, and he somewhat saved the 05 class... and with what willingham left him (or didnt leave him i should say) for a defense I think he did a great job.. now 9-3 is not good enough for me, just like bucks going 9-3 isnt good enough for you guys... i expect Notre Dame to continually be top 5 for at least the next 5 years.. and could honestly see Ohio State and Notre Dame playing each other regularly at the end of the season... so like i said, being a notre dame fan (and suffering through the years of incompetent coaching) i put Weis on the list. He would be number 5 on my list

I would say Weis is not that far behind with Game Planning and Play calls, if we had a defense I think a lot of things would have been different,,, although I still think OSU would have gotten the best of us,, I dont know if anyone could have stopped the Bucks that night.

was the 3-step drop there all day, or was that more the result of a prevent D? While it yielded lots of yardage, there were a good number of <7 yard plays which milked the clock.
