They say everything is bigger in Texas and new football recruit J.B. Shugarts is no exception. His 6-foot-7-inch, 300-pound build, combined with a 5.1 time in the 40-yard dash, make for an offensive lineman who can hit hard and fast.

The Klein High School graduate committed to Ohio State in late April and is already attending classes.

During his three-year career with the Klein Bearkats, Shugarts dominated the opposition with his size and quickness. His senior season he had 121 pancakes and never allowed his quarterback to be sacked. Not only did Shugarts play offensive tackle, he briefly played defensive end and was even quick enough to play tight end for some of his junior season.

"A good athlete like J.B. that is (6 feet 7 inches), 300 pounds is always going to be a big influence on your football team," Klein coach Stan Labay said.

During his senior season, Shugarts helped the Bearkats to a 7-5 record and a trip to the playoffs where they lost in the second round.

After the season, Shugarts was awarded numerous accolades including 5A Unanimous First Team All District Offensive Lineman of 2007 and was asked to play in the Army All-American Bowl with other high-ranking recruits. Shugarts is also ranked No. 56 in the ESPN top 150 recruits.

From what I read (I think from Grad) it was from a nasty leg wip.

Fellow freshman lineman J.B. Shugarts was out for part of spring practice because of a leg injury. But coach Jim Tressel was pleased at Shugarts' speedy recovery and that he likely will play Saturday in the spring game.

"Those young guys have to learn how they're going to feel the rest of their football lives," Tressel said. "They're going to hurt -- the trenches are brutal. And it shows you, for a young guy, that shows pretty good toughness."

I saw Brewster, Shugarts and possibly Grant Schwartz playing basketball at the RPAC a few days ago. Shugarts seemed fine to me?

J.B. Shugarts

? Basics: Freshman offensive tackle
? Quick history: From Klein, Texas, where he was a Parade magazine and U.S. Army All-American, he enrolled in winter quarter so he could go through spring drills. Freshman linemen Michael Brewster and Mike Adams also enrolled early, but injuries kept them out of the spring game.
? Spring-game display: Playing right tackle for the Scarlet, he had his moments, like on Todd Boeckman's rollout, 48-yard pass to Brian Hartline in the first quarter when he picked off a would-be sacker. He also was called once for illegal procedure.
? What it means: Shugarts said in January that he wanted to challenge for the starting spot vacated by right tackle Kirk Barton. Bryant Browning seems to have the job leaving camp, but Shugarts likely earned playing time.
? Quotable: "It was good to see J.B. Shugarts back in there, because he had been in and doing well (earlier) in the spring, then got banged a little and missed a couple of days. I talked to JB today (he was with Terrelle Pryor and Willie Mobley, actually - didn't get to talk to Willie, Terrelle seemed quiet, probably annoyed at all the attention he gets ). JB seemed like a really nice kid. I'm posting this because the end of our conversation ended with JB saying..

"Third time's a charm!"

Oh man I just got done watching the replay of the YSU game. On offense I watched mainly the O-line and Shugarts was extremely impressive. IMO the best performance out of all the freshman O-line and they all seemed to play well. Everything he did was impressive. He looked mean and nasty, relentlessly blocking downfield, dominating pass protection, and on an inside stunt during a run to his side he had the quickness and presence of mine to just ride the guy inside and push him about 10 yards away from the play. I know it was YSU talent but I think he has what it takes to be dominating. With all our young offensive talent I think we have some very exciting years to come.

I'm about to go re-watch the game but I watched J.B. alot and I also noticed he did a great job. I have always said I thought J.B. could do the best out of the gates...he already had great run blocking technique and obviously, he is huge. I think J.B. is going to be a great one.
