A pair of Ohio State freshman football players will be in court this week to face a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Mike Adams, 18, and J.B. Shugarts, 19, were cited on January 14 after being pulled over for running a stop sign at Pearl St. and E. 14th Street, in the campus area.
They were not arrested.
Each has pleaded not guilty. Adams has a pre-trial hearing set for Monday and Shugarts for Wednesday, both in Franklin County Municipal Court.
The charge is a fourth-degree misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail and a $250 fine.
Messages to OSU coach Jim Tressel and team spokesperson Shelly Poe last night were not immediately returned.
Both players are offensive lineman who saw action last season, but both were injury-plagued.
Adams, from Dublin Coffman, is expected to take over as the starting left tackle this fall. Shugarts, from Klein, Texas, is expected to compete for a starting job at right guard or right tackle.

Disappointing? Yes.

But be realistic. College kids, with most likely a bowl?? I have no idea, just a guess....b/c I've been in college and know that, that is everywhere. Marijuana is no more severe than an offensive lineman fighting b/c he has way too much liquour in his body.

Sorry - not buying.

Given that we probably hear about one in ten of these sort of incidents there have simply been too many lately for my comfort level.

It was rampant under Cooper. Things are supposed to be different now.

not buying that a majority of college students see marijuana on a regular basis?? I think that is being beyond naive.

Not saying this is OK or right, but if they were driving around with a 12 pack it would probably be Okay. Which is silly to me.

More than anything, I am disappointed these guys aren't looking to perfrom at an optimal level, I just am not any more disappointed that they are rolling around with a weed pipe, than a beer bong or 12 pqck.

And to clarify again, I have no idea what the drug paraphenalia is...just a guess from being a college student.

I know college kids smoke weed. I guarantee some football players do too. My beef is with carrying it (paraphernalia/drugs) around with you or in the car. Why not leave it at home and not take the risk? Also, don't forget to bring a towel.

just a bit unrealtic for a college student IMO. And not everyone can dePend on Mr. Towelie. Mr. Towelie only shows up occasionally.

Again, I wish these types of things didn't happen, but then again they are 18-19 years old. They are kids.

It did hit BP already...just not posted on the boards. There was a test given at the time of the arrest, if it shows up negative, charges are dropped. Both swear the test will be negative.

Leaving the drugs/paraphernalia at home is unrealistic? I guess they can't really do their thing in the dorms but c'mon. I don't smoke pot and I have a half a dozen friends who beg me to get high with them. These guys know a lot more people than I do. I hope they learn from this. We're going to need them.

key words: Misdemeanor. Not arrested.

This is essentially a traffic ticket. "How do you plead?" "No contest, your honor" "What you did was really bad, M-Kay. Court costs and a fine..." Bangs gavel "Next.... how do you plead?"

The fact that this happened on January 14 and you're only hearing about it now, a month and a half later, says something about the "seriousness" of this incident as well, if you ask me. I don't mean to make light, but I'm just not worried about this one. That said, my rope of tolerance will be much shorter if either of them tests positive for weed (also, like Billmac, guessing) during the season....

I hope they learn from this. Seriously, both of these guys are going to be competing for starting jobs this year and something like this would be extremely detrimental to starting. Hopefully the tests come back negative, (although I've never heard of a drug test taking over a month and a half to come back) and they learn from this and get back to work.
Aside from that, I've been hearing that the class of '08 has been "killin it" in practice and has some clear leaders.
