When Boren comes back and Miller is at tackle again, you would think someone needs to move to RT though, seeing as how you have an unproven tackle with Cordle (imo he could possibly be a Bryant Browning who is a square peg in a round hole). It will be interesting to see where everyone is at in the jersey scrimmage.

This is my biggest question (I wouldn't say concern), but Cordle never struck me as a tackle. Possibly just the fact that watching him at Center/guard all these years has skewed my perception.

Anyway, like the move with Shuggy.

Shugarts Forcing His Way to the Top

By most accounts, J.B. Shugarts is ahead of schedule.

He did not start 10 games last season as a freshman, like classmate Michael Brewster, or open fall camp atop the depth chart at one of the tackle positions, like Mike Adams, but Shugarts has to like where he stands after the first two weeks of Ohio State's fall practice.

After opening camp as the backup to senior Jim Cordle at right tackle, Shugarts split time at left tackle with junior Andy Miller on the first-team offensive line during the Buckeyes' fall jersey scrimmage Saturday.

"He's right there in the mix fighting for playing time," offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Bollman said. "He has the ability to go both sides. He's fighting for things and doing a good job and getting back in the groove."

For Shugarts, the first day of fall camp was a little bit like his first day at Ohio State.

After missing all of spring practice following off-season shoulder surgery, the 6-foot-8 tackle had those same anxious butterflies to get back on the practice field this fall, and back into the fray on the offensive line.

"It was hard to watch. I've never had to sit out like that, I've never had a major surgery," he said. "It was pretty tough, because I like to work out a lot. Not even getting to lift weights; that was pretty tough too."

As difficult as it was for Shugarts to stay off the practice field and out of the weight room during his recovery time, the sophomore from Klein, Tex. used the time to shed some unwanted baby fat from his large frame.

"When I checked into camp (last spring) I was about 312, but I'm about 305 right now," Shugarts said. "When I got here, I had a lot more baby fat. I've trimmed up a lot and I've got more muscle mass."

He also used the time to get his shoulder right.

While his teammates were running around, catching passes, throwing blocks and making tackles, Shugarts spent the spring rehabbing his shoulder with Ohio State's training staff so that he would have this chance to compete for playing time on the offensive line this fall.

"Everything feels good. My feet are good and my shoulder feels great," Shugarts said. "I feel great now. I'm punching real good, getting good hand placement on my blocks, driving good, throwing people down, so everything's feeling real good right now."

I heard something on 97.1 The Fan today that Shugarts was spotted wearing some sort of brace on his foot. Did I hear that correctly? I thought there would be something about it here on BuckeyePlanet for sure.

Most likely precautionary. Tressel made no mention of it during his press conference yesterday when asked about team injuries either.

This also brings up the amount of youth on the line now, which sets us up beautifully for the future, but what about the short term?

We all know continuity is important and the line has been shifted around frequently.

CLEVELAND -- For the first time in nearly two years, J.B. Shugarts was basking in that yin-yang blend of postgame joy and soreness.

The right tackle made his first start for Ohio State yesterday, and helped the Buckeyes roll to 522 yards and a 38-0 victory over Toledo in Cleveland Browns Stadium.

"I was really excited; this is the first time I've really played football since I was a senior in high school," said Shugarts, a sophomore. "Just that feeling now after the game, after a big win -- it just feels great, like something I've really missed."

Shugarts replaced senior Jim Cordle, who is out for a few weeks because of an ankle injury, and line play was already a concern.

In addition to Shugarts starting, the Buckeyes made several other changes as the game went on.

Sophomore Mike Adams, who sat out the first two games for disciplinary reasons, played several series at left tackle. Andrew Moses played some at right guard, with starter Bryant Browning shifting to right tackle.

It wasn't a flawless day for the line. They gave up a sack, and they were guilty of five false-start penalties, three by Shugarts.

"I was a little rusty," he said. "I jump the snap pretty good, so I'm pretty sure I wasn't offsides except one of them, but that's how it goes."

Coach Jim Tressel was pleased in general, particularly in how the line handled Toledo's variety of blitzes.

"They had to handle a lot of junk," Tressel said. "That will prove to be a valuable experience."

Hoping to see the "rust" gone by next Saturday. We will need the offensive line to have a solid game next week. Illinois has had trouble mounting a pass rush so that will help. Their secondary is a weakness.
Hopefully the defense gives us some short fields.

Shug has been jumpy since he got onto campus. He is a good lineman and will do well, but his false starts are nothing new for him.... He used to do it constantly in practice last year too... I wasnt suprized even a little when he false started in the game Sat.

is he saying he didn't really have a false start on 2 of these.....he's just that fast?

I would like to see those plays focused on just him if that's the case.

Honestly, I thought the third one he got was bogus. He was quicker than the other linemen to move, but he didn't beat the snap.

He is very quick off the ball! Just maybe he will be a better lineman than Adams. And that's saying a lot.
