Always well-prepared, Orlando Edgewater offensive lineman Michael Brewster will arrive in Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 7 for his jump-start on college life and academics.
That night, the Ohio State Buckeyes, his new team, will face LSU in the BCS Championship Game at New Orleans.
"I wish I could be on the field with them," Brewster said. "But my day will come."
Actually, according to Edgewater coach Bill Gierke, Brewster's day arrived some time ago.
Brewster, a 6-foot-5, 295-pounder who was the No. 2 vote-getter on The Tampa Tribune's sixth annual Best of the South team, became assured of a distinguished future in the game, almost from the moment he arrived on Gierke's doorstep.
It was 2006, just before spring practice.
Gierke remembers being introduced to a new student.
A very large student.
"I didn't even know who he was and I sure wasn't aware he was at our school," Gierke said.

Coaching stability builds Ohio State

Columbus- Following shoulder surgery, Ohio State recruit Michael Brewster won't be playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl for high school seniors on Jan. 5. He'll still be in San Antonio, though, at work for the Buckeyes.

As usual, coaching changes shift the recruiting landscape this time of year, and the departure of Rich Rodriguez from West Virginia to Michigan affected two recruits still in the mix for the Buckeyes, quarterback Terrelle Pryor and offensive lineman Josh Jenkins. They'll also be at the All-American Bowl, where Brewster will spread the message of stability in a college football world where 17 schools, or 14 percent of the programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision, will have new head coaches next season.

"I'll tell them, 'I think Ohio State is more stable than some other places,' " Brewster said. "That's pretty much how I chose Ohio State."

Brewster became attached to offensive line coach Jim Bollman, a coach he feels is guaranteed to remain through his time in Columbus. Bollman, in his seventh season with the Buckeyes, has been with Tressel since he was hired by Ohio State. One of Brewster's other finalists was Southern Cal, where line coach Pat Ruel is in his third season after making five different stops in the previous seven years.

"I know Coach Bollman is going to be there, and there's no way I could turn him down," Brewster said. "You want to play for the guy that recruits you."

National recruiting analyst Jamie Newburg of Scout.com believes that, other than playing time, coaching stability is as important as any consideration for a recruit.

"In a perfect world, one would think a player would commit because of a school or the program," Newburg said, "but recruiting is all about relationships."

As for Brewster, who might skip spring practice but said he'll be "200 percent ready" by the fall, once he leaves San Antonio, he'll head to Columbus. He'll move into his dorm on Jan. 6 then be ready to enroll early for the start of classes on Jan. 7, surrounded, he figures, by coaches who aren't going anywhere.

i'm confused, why would Brewster enroll early and then not participate in spring practice? i thought that was the whole point

Rehabbing an injury. Plus, even if he doesn't suit up and physically practice, there's enough mental prep work too. Can't do anything but help to get to school early.

Also it can't hurt to get to know your teammates for a full quarter and get accustomed to college life before you have to juggle football practices as well.

Since Brewster will become a student @ OSU and essentially a part of the program / team, is he still allowed to call up recruits or does the prior relationship clause come into effect?

Something i have always wondered about especially with so many kids enrolling early these days...
