The healthy competition between Shuggarts, Brewster and Adams (and Jenkins if he does the right thing ) is going to be fun to watch.

You don't get to their level of play and acclaim without being ultra-competetive and these guys and their defensive counterparts GG, Williams, Wells and Shaq will be banging heads and pumping iron to show each other who's the man and we the fans of Buckeye football are the beneficiaries of this.

COACH TRESSEL: To get a little bit of viewpoint before we go into a whole bunch of questions, since the guy was kind of like the unofficial captain of this recruiting class, Michael Brewster, I'm going to have Michael come up and just give you opening comments as to what he sees. He didn't know he was coming up here like this, but that's all right. Get used to it. Michael is from Edgewater High School in Orlando and he did a great job as kind of our designated leader of this group and we'd like to have him just share with you a little bit about this 2008 group from his perspective. Michael?

MICHAEL BREWSTER: How are you guys doing today? I think this is a real good class, pretty diverse. We've got a lot of needs. There's going to be -- after next year we'll graduate quite a few offensive linemen, so we've got three real good ones coming next year. D line, we've got five, I saw, which is real good. We've got some inside guys, speed rushers. Travis Howard, I think, was the steal of the class because no one really knew about him, but after seeing his film, he's definitely a special player, good guy.
We've got some good linebackers. I mean, I just think this class -- everyone talks about, you know, these classes with 27, 28 guys being the Number 1 classes, but I think if you go player for player, talent, you know, person, character, that this class is probably, you know, a special one, one of the top ones that has came through here in a while, because I know there has been some great classes. But I'm real excited about next year and about getting the guys up here this summer, the guys coming in March. So we're going to have a lot of hard work, but it will all pay off, so thank you.

COACH TRESSEL: Want to introduce your sidekick, have him give some thoughts?

MICHAEL BREWSTER: My roommate and workout partner, and we came out here early, J.B. Shugarts from Klein, Texas. I didn't know we were doing this.

J.B.SHUGARTS: Hi. I'm J.B. But I couldn't agree with Michael more. We have a great class coming in. Not only great players, but these are great people, but just the fact that we already know each other and we're already coming together as a family, that's what sets us over the top with all these other schools like USC and Florida, so I think it's going to be really special and you can get prepared for a lot of National Championships.

COACH TRESSEL: Easy, J.B.
MICHAEL BREWSTER: Forgot to mention one thing, Jake and DeVier, we have some great receivers coming in, should put that down. Those guys are about as good as they come. I didn't want to forget about that.

Trend for early college enrollment grows among prep players

Michael Brewster's life has changed dramatically during the past two months.

Brewster, who was a standout offensive lineman at Edgewater in December, wakes up before 5 a.m. at least four days a week and piles on winter clothes. He heads off to optional workouts with his new Ohio State teammates before the sun comes up. Then he goes to class, rehabilitation for an injured shoulder and study hall.

He is among a growing number of athletes known as early enrollees.

They aren't among the young college standouts who left college early and are participating in this week's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. They are taking the early trend a step further, graduating from high school a semester early to enroll in college and participate in spring football workouts before their true freshman year even begins.

"I'm glad I'm here, but it's a ton of work," Brewster said. "It's like a job. If you don't love it, you won't last."

Edgewater Coach Bill Gierke, who worked with Brewster, said he sees some cases where enrolling early in college could help athletes.

"Michael was a very dedicated student who understood how hard he would have to work to make this happen," Gierke said. "I think he is a special kind of young man who could handle the challenge and succeed. I'm very curious to see how he does and whether this really is good for kids like him."

Brewster insists heading off to college early really isn't for everyone.

He misses his family and his dog, not to mention relaxing with high school friends.

"I don't have any regrets about starting college early, but I can see how a lot of guys wouldn't make it if they tried it," Brewster said. "I tell everyone who asks me that it really isn't a big party. If you're going to do it, you better be ready to work."

That is what is so great about the recruiting classes the staff has brought in the last few years, they are filled with no only great players, but great people. Brewster is another who epitomizes that.

I just ran into Brewster at Rooster's on Olentangy River Rd. Dude is looking huge...didn't notice any favoring or obvious lingering effects from his shoulder surgery, but wings aren't exactly 75 lb dumbells or 275 pound DLs.

He appeared to be in excellent shape and while I would consider myself a decent sized human being - 6'3" and 230 - Brewster dwarfed me.
