I see it being a problem for a stud basketball player with 1 year remaining, who leaves his tiny school to star at duke for a year... with no layoff invovled.

Troy Smith has his bachelor's degree already, and Leinart only took the one elective last year, because he didn't need any degree specific classes to grauate. Keeping guys like TS and Leinart away from their competition is exactly why the coaches want this rule repealed. The fact that it's wrong to repeal the rule makes no difference whatsoever, to them.

Given the poor grad rates for bball players, I think this incentive would be well worth the cost.

Stud players aren't playing college basketball for 5 years, regardless of where they're playing.

Troy graduated this spring, and he's coming back to play next season...

perhaps stud was a bad word choice... I'm envisioning the heart and soul of a George Mason team. They return a very strong team, except he runs off to florida for a year instead.
I think the year layoff is a very good rule to prevent defections.
If it's for the sake of academics, perhaps they could not count the year off against his eligibility, if he has redshirted already.

I believe this was actually mentioned in the thread concerning NCAA Academic Reforms.
