Bustnuts no longer linked?
Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I just noticed this morning that Bustnuts is no longer linked under "» Other tOSU Sites" on the front page. Out of curiosity, did they complain, or are we just totally disassociating ourselves with them (not that we were ever "associated" with them anyways...)?

I just did that today. I have some more links to add to that I think (not all OSU related, some seasonal like ps2rosters.com, etc.), so I wanted to trim down and only link to sites that put community first. Growing up, my brothers and I weren't allowed to have cereal that had sugar as one of the first three ingredients. These days I sort of feel that way about commercialism within fan communities. There's absolutely nothing wrong with trying to make a buck, and in some arenas there's nothing wrong with that being your primary interest. I feel differently about fan communities that follow public institutions and their athletic departments though. I still think there's room for commercialism there, but think it should be subordinate to being a positive for the community the entity at question serves. So it's partially an ordering of ingredients deal, lol, if that makes any sense.
BNuts has hired a Director of Sales and Marketing and has opened a second office, a link from the front page of this little site isn't going to have any impact on them either way, and we still link to them 100s of times (more positive than negative, lol, even though some won't believe that) within the forums. In fact, 3yards now includes links to their articles as part of our news aggregation, so the side link was redundant. So this is by no means an effort to deny they exist, even though KL took no small number of steps to deny we do.
The sites we link to on the front page (IMO) should be places that afford people of all means access to the content they're (we're) so hungry for.

Since it came up ... is there any problem with linking to their (or anyone else's) news articles? I know in some circles there is no love lost between the two sites, so I don't want to offend anyone. Just trying to post the most comprehensive list of OSU news possible on a daily basis.
I don't link to any premium information, and the only pay site that gets a link is the Columbus Dispatch. Their news can be accessed through a number of other sources (ONN, WBNS, 1460) that regurgitate much of the same info, if only a day or two later. I just found a "backdoor" to their info at 1460 by playing with the url address. The formatting sucks, but it's the same info.

That's actually something I've been working on. I'm trying to compile a list of NFL and NCAA independent fan sites, with an emphasis on any running the same core software (for future possibilities I'm not equipped to really think about yet).
A perfect example of this is a site like http://www.extremeskins.com - they're running vB at the core, we have a couple crossover users, their independent and money isn't their primary motivater (that's commentary on them, not a backhanded slap at others, even if it sounds like it), they're very well put together and run -- that's exactly the type of site I'd like to link to, and would be more than happy to recommend to my peers here. |
