Rory Nicol was above him on the Spring Game depth chart. So to answer your question, yes there was someone "just as good sitting on the bench" even though he wasn't on the bench.
Nicol was hurt last year, that is why you might not have heard much about him.

I don't think we had anyone on the bench that is that good....yet. Frost was a pretty big boy with soft hands...that's a hard combo to find.

That's true, but he was so undisciplined it was amazing that he didn't get more unsportsmanlike flags thrown. He was constantly pushing after the play and jawing, etc.
I like a guy who plays with attitude, but Marcel was just nuts.

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but I remember Rory Nicol.
He's the TE that caught the Smith TD pass in the 2004 Iowa debacle. Think he broke his ankle in 2005 camp, and took a Medical Redshirt for the season.
They say he's 100%. He'll more than fill than the bill if that's true.
