OSU Assistant Coaches
Seven top 25 teams have head coaches that were once assistant coaches at OSU, four in the top 7.
Jim Tressel
Nick Saban
Walt Harris
Larry Cooker
Pete Carroll
Glen Mason
Ron Zook
Many people feel that Dantonio could get a head coaching position if he would choose to leave Ohio State. With his defense scheme and game adjustment he could get a Mid-major or better team into the top 25.

Ohio State is a breeding ground for head coaches. If you go back through the history of college football it seems like a lot of the great ones (Bo Schem, Lou Holtz ect.) have been a part of the OSU coaching staff at one point or another. Dantonio may end up becoming a top notch head coach at some point down the road, although I have read that he has stated that he wants to chill at OSU for a while.
Dantonio never worries me when it comes to good game plans.

Miami (OH) could produce a list of legendary coaches:
Woody Hayes
Bo Schembechler
Ara Parseghian
Paul Brown
Sid Gillman
Weeb Ewbank
Ohio has had some good coaches that taught the game in this state.

I don't think D'Antonio is going to leave any time soon. He's the #2 paid guy on the staff and he gets to see his results every single game. Not saying he wouldn't be a great head coach, but just because an assistant coach is good in his one area (defense, offense, special teams) doesn't necessarily mean he'd be good as a head coach.
(edit for additional comment)
There was a thread over on Bucknuts (although I'm on posting hiatus I still peruse the place) about Speilman being an assistant coach. I think he'd be a killer coach, and if D'Antonio ever did leave, I'd get Speilman first...he really knows his $h!t about defense, and football as a whole.

I would think he is smart enough to delegate the rest and just tinker with the defense, just as Tress knows that the "D" side of the ball does not need his help or input very often.

Dantonio got that defense from Bob Stoops. Tressel and Dantonio went out to Oklahoma over the summer a couple of years ago and brought it back with them.

Rip, wouldn't that be a real bitch if we used that defense to beat them in the Sugar Bowl?

How much exactly did Dantonio learn when he and Tressel were in Norman? Let's not forget this is the same man that shut down our high powered offense in '98.
