I heard Mitchell and Patterson were the starting safeties, where does that put Jam-O?

Jam O just needs to keep working and not get frustrated.
He'll be fine.

From what has been reported he hasn't been making the plays.......the others have been. He'll see time, but he's not going to be handed the spot because he has great athleticism. I think this speaks leaps and bounds for the talent level we have on our defense.

YSU, I respect your input.....you seem to be on with your analysis. Perhaps Tressel was implementing a new wrinkle and trying it out against the first team defense. I agree with you when you state the the less the media has to go with, the harder they dig. I can't fault Tressel though for wanting to keep his offense in check. He's the play caller, and he has key plays for the big games that are played. He doesn't want to give an already talented Texas squad any advantage, regardless of how small it can be. Look how many tight games he's won over his era. He's not a Pete Carroll or Mack Brown kind of coach. He runs a system that will get you into many more tight games. So, I'm assuming that he realizes how small the margin is that he has in Austin. So, he'll take any slight advantage that he can get.

This is just my guess, I'm just relaying the interview that I saw. Tressel seemed genuinely [censored]ed off, which is something I don't see too often.

Didn't we run the option last year? I remember it out of the shotgun quite a few times, you could almost bank on it close to the goal line. Unless we're converting to a wishbone triple option offense I don't see what the big secret is about OSU running the option.

I don't remember running it close to the goaline. Tressel always seems to go to the double tight package when he gets close. They seemed to run it out of the shotgun for the most part.

Perhaps they are implementing a more focused triple option threat.....out of the I formation (Beanie at the fullback, and Pittman at the HB). Imagine the dynamics of that approach.......

Again, I am just forwarding you the information that I saw on the news tonight. Over the years you get a feel for Tressel and what he says. He was much more [censored]ed than I have normally ever seen him. Perhaps it's his focus for this season showing it's hairs in the press. Or it could be him sending a warning shot out to the local media.

IIRC they ran an option in the Fiesta Bowl in the red zone.
Troy's pitch to Teddy went awry and was recovered by ND, keeping ND in the game temporarily.

Tressel keeps running QB on tight leash

Coach says he's trying to teach Troy Smith to be patient by keeping him from scrambling in scrimmage.

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

COLUMBUS — Putting quarterback Troy Smith in a no-contact black jersey during a scrimmage is like taking a thoroughbred and making it a Budweiser Clydesdale. But Ohio State coach Jim Tressel believes his team will be better in the long run that way.
Smith couldn't be hit — gotta protect the franchise QB — but also couldn't scramble during the 175-play affair Friday in Ohio Stadium.
That may explain why the offense managed just one touchdown in eight possessions with him under center, although the inspired defense turned out to be more competent than anyone had imagined.
"When you limit him a little bit, it helps him work on some things," Tressel said of Smith, "but it also takes things away that he likes to do.
"But that's OK. He's working on the patience you have to have sometimes."
The defense was unexpectedly stout, which may be a sign the Buckeyes are capable of living up to their No. 1 ranking.
Sophomore Marcus Freeman (Wayne High School) and senior John Kerr started at outside linebacker with sophomore James Laurinaitis in the middle.
The corners were senior Antonio Smith and sophomore Malcolm Jenkins (who started three games last season). The safeties were senior Brandon Mitchell and sophomore Nick Patterson.
Todd Denlinger, a redshirt freshman from Troy, was among about seven players rotating on the defensive line.
"I think we have the makings of a good defense," Tressel said. "But every week, when you face something a bit different and people have some special things for you and you have to learn on the run ... that will be the biggest challenge."
Coleman makes mark
Defensive back Kurt Coleman, a freshman from Northmont, produced one of the best hits in the scrimmage, wiping out receiver Brian Robiskie to break up a sideline pass.
He also intercepted a pass from quarterback Todd Boeckman (St. Henry).
Asked to choose standouts from the scrimmage, Tressel said: "I noticed Kurt Coleman. He may have done some things wrong, but I noticed he did some things well."
Practice open
The Buckeyes will hold an autograph session and open practice beginning at 7 p.m. Monday at Ohio Stadium.
"If a bunch of people show up, that'd be awesome," Tressel said, adding that fans shouldn't expect too many thrills on the field.
"It will be a fundamental practice, not a scrimmage or anything like that. They're not going to see all kinds of secrets. It will be a big work day Monday."
Zwick banged up
Senior Justin Zwick, in a desperate fight to hold on to the No. 2 QB spot, injured his left shoulder after colliding with Kerr while diving for a fumbled snap.
Tressel said he didn't think Zwick was seriously hurt. The one-time starter unofficially finished 3-of-9 passing for 27 yards.
D'Andrea ailing
Senior linebacker Mike D'Andrea sat out the scrimmage. Chronic knee problems may keep him from playing this season.
