Breaking down the Buckeyes' schedule

Thursday, August 24, 2006
Sept. 2 N. Illinois, 3:30 WEWS Ch. 5
Garrett Wolfe's 1,580 yards last year make him the nation's leading returning rusher. Jim Tressel's apprehensive take on his young Buckeyes trying to tackle him: "Welcome to our new defense."
Sept. 9 at Texas, 8 WEWS Ch. 5

QB Vince Young (NFL) and RB Ramonce Taylor (transfer) accounted for 50 touchdowns last year. That's a lot of missing points. Still, a potential 1 vs. 2 matchup is even a bit scarier than Garrett.
Sept. 16 Cincinnati, noon TBA
The Bearcats haven't beaten the Buckeyes since 1897 (0-9 since). Maybe coach Mark Dantonio, the defensive coordinator on the Buckeyes' national title team in 2002, has some ideas on stopping Garrett Wolfe.
Sept. 23 Penn State, TBA, TBA
Ohio State tried to recruit new Nittany Lion quarterback Anthony Morelli. Remember when Joe Paterno joked about his prostate exam at Big Ten media day? Seems like he's in a good mood.
Sept. 30 at Iowa, 8 WEWS Ch. 5/ESPN
Remember when QB Drew Tate spiked the ball last year because the Ohio State defense was overwhelming him and his young line? Seemed like he was in a bad mood. He should be more pleasant this year.

Oct. 7 Bowling Green, TBA, TBA
If only QB Omar Jacobs had stayed in school instead of leaving for the NFL, Jim Tressel could be welcoming his defense to another MAC offensive star.
Oct. 14 at Mich. St., TBA, TBA

Remember when MSU coach John L. Smith went bonkers after OSU blocked a field goal and ran it back for a TD to end the first half last year? Yeah, that special teams coach isn't around anymore.
Oct. 21 Indiana, TBA, TBA
Maybe OSU should give this one to the Hoosiers since Thad Matta swiped Greg Oden out of Indy for the basketball team.
Oct. 28 Minnesota 3:30, WEWS Ch. 5/ESPN/ESPN2
Just three more years until the Gophers get their new on-campus stadium, designed by those HOK folks who did Jacobs Field.
Nov. 4 at Illinois, TBA, TBA
Ron Zook story from the Illini media guide, about recruiting with John Cooper while a Buckeye assistant. "Cooper wanted to stop for seafood. Zook zipped through a Shoney's drive-thru for clam chowder." Then the chowder lost to Michigan kidding.
Nov. 11 at N'western, TBA, TBA
Wildcat players will be wearing a "Walk" patch on their uniforms this season to honor their late coach, Randy Walker.
Nov. 18 Michigan, 3:30 WEWS Ch. 5
Hard to imagine the Wolverines could be looking at another five-loss season. Actually, this could easily be for the Big Ten title, with major BCS implications. Hint to Lloyd Carr: Avoid chowder as a pregame meal.

I used to live in the DC area. You're going to get used to having regional coverage consist of some crummy game involving the ACC, like Rutgers vs. UNC. Better start searching for a good sports bar that has plenty of games on each weekend. Don't worry--there's plenty around that will have OSU on each week.

What's so funny is the fact they're playing these two joke bowl games that'll be lucky to draw 30,000 fans apiece with teams that nobody wants to watch in between the BCS games and the national title. Nobody gave a [censored] about them when they were played in mid-December and nobody is going to give a [censored] now. At least when they were played early you'd watch because it was fun to get into watching college football again after a few week layoff, but now that they're being played after every game but one, nobody is going to plan their night around watching two mediocre teams that don't deserve a bowl to begin with.

OSU-Penn State at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 23

11 a.m.

COLUMBUS - Ohio State?s Big Ten football opener with Penn State on Sept. 23 has been announced as a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, to be televised on WEWS Ch. 5.

ABC had expressed interest in making it a night game, but the Buckeyes prefer to limit their night games, especially in conference, and the home team has the final say in those decisions.

Kickoff times are now known for all of the games at Ohio Stadium this season.

The Buckeyes play Cincinnati at noon Saturday; vs. Bowling Green at 3:30 on Oct. 7; vs. Indiana at noon on Oct. 21; vs. Minnesota at 3:30 on Oct. 28; and vs. Michigan at 3:30 on Nov. 18.

They also play at Iowa at 8 p.m. on Sept. 30. To be determined are games at Michigan State on Oct. 14, at Illinois on Nov. 4 and at Northwestern on Nov. 11.

I guess in today's society where everybody without a losing record makes a bowl game I suppose they "deserve" a bowl game by those standards. The teams that play in the these games are not high caliber and these games don't draw ratings or attendence is the bigger point. It would be like the undercard for a heavyweight fight and right before the title fight they have a couple of little kids have a pillow fight. While it's entertaining for a little bit, it's not long before you're asking yourself when's this going to be over so we can see the heavyweights go at it.

Just because you are barely over .500 on the year, that doesnt make you good enough to be a "bowl" team. Also, playing these games in January takes away from heavy bragging right of playing in "Jan. bowl games" which is great for smack talk on the bards and at bars.

I think 'Thump' said it best - "why reward mediocrity"

Not nitpicking, just pointing something out...

Teams that are NOT just over .500 will get to bowls this year.

There are 32 bowls and 64 bowl teams.

There are 119 Div. IA teams. (Half of that is 59 1/2)

That means it is very likely that, with the addition of a 12th game, that some 6-6 teams are going to be in Bowls this year. That means some BOWL TEAMS will end up with a LOSING RECORD. That just doesn't frickin' compute.

although i agree that many bowl-bound teams are certainly are rewarded for mediocrity (mostly from bcs schools), oftentimes non-bcs schools with great regular season records play in these games. for example, the mac has an auto bid into each of the aforementioned bowls (gmac and int'l)... these teams have great seasons in their conference to get into these bowl games. they aren't like the iowa state's of the world who can go 3-5 in their conference and win a couple of cupcake games in their non-conference schedule.

as a matter of fact, miami u. went to the gmac bowl in 2003.. they finished #10 in the ap poll. are you all saying that they didn't deserve a bowl game because it rewards mediocrity? how about marshall finishing in the top 10 under b. leftwich and going to the gmac bowl??

just curious what hardcore buckeye fans think.
