Trend-wise, I guess we should have known that Datish would get the other spot on the offensive side. Indeed, the last two seniors to play center (Mangold and Stepanovich) were also captains.

True, but both played center at OSU some before being selected captain....Datish hasn't. That to me shows a lot about the respect his teammates have for him.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
Smith, Datish, Pitcock, Patterson named captains
Saturday, August 26, 2006
Once again, the Ohio State football media guide has proved to be an amazing predictor of which players will be chosen captains.
For the third straight season, the four players appearing on the front of the media guide ended up being announced as captains several weeks later.
Yesterday, the school released this season’s captains: quarterback Troy Smith, center Doug Datish and defensive tackles Quinn Pitcock and David Patterson.
All four are seniors. Smith, Datish and Pitcock are fifth-year seniors. Among them, they have 128 games of experience.
"This is a terrific honor to be elected captain by your teammates," Smith said in a statement. "Work is just getting started. We have had a great training camp. Now we just need to keep going." The top-ranked Buckeyes broke fall camp yesterday. They have the weekend off before beginning preparations for the Sept. 2 opener against Northern Illinois. Kickoff is 3:36 p.m. on ABC.
