Wolfe is a stud, hands down...could another RB accomplish against us what he did? No, I really don't believe there is another back (that we play) that has Wolfe's versatility of shiftiness, strength, speed, and agility. He's a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield, and he's a threat to go anywhere on the field once has the ball - not necessarily just where the play is called. We will face other talented backs, but none with the specific strengths of Wolfe.

CBF40 - nice review, but I would have to disagree with your assessment of the defense as a whole. I thought the d backs played excellent, especially considering their hands were tied due to playcalling and excessive substitution. The coaches were obviously more worried about keeping it close to the vest than they were about the game...in all honesty, I believe they stayed in the basic defense just to get film on a lot of these players. Nick Patterson, Homan, and Laurinatis in particular played very well, IMO. I was probably most impressed with the deference every defensive player showed Animal Jr. in the huddle.

Leadership!
People don't give enough credit to leadership on a team.
Texas had great leadership last year.
We now have great leadership from our QB and from Lil Animal.

Well I gave the DB's a B rating, which isnt horrible, but you have to admit that there were missed tackles and bad angles. But I agree about keeping it close to the vest.

At the moment the only starter that I am a little nervous about there is Patterson. He really got blown by on that one run by Wolfe up the sideline and he wasnt up in run support as much as I would like to see, but that is b/c of the cover 3 that was being played. Also the reason we didnt see Jenkins in on a whole lot of tackles.

Troy the runner

While I can say nothing but praise for Troy's performance last week, I will say that we DO want Smith running the ball against UT, Iowa, scUM, etc. While I love watching Troy become the complete QB, the one that looks to pass first, then run when he must, I also love the coaching staff that puts the opposing defense on edge by running Troy out of the gun and some other formations. The option pass with Troy is almost unstoppable. We NEED that in the gameplan. We didn't need that for NIU, but we will for others. So while I think Troy played "lights-out", I'm even more excited about what he can do when the entire playbook is afforded to him. This week, we take the shackles and the green jersey off of him and ask him to pass for 290 and run for 40-50. Here's one hoping he can do it!

Most of Troy's best runs arent called plays, they are when things break down and he takes off...

It's about keeping the D honest, and Troy running out of the gun does that.

I thought Patterson played well. The way I interpreted things, the DB's hands were tied because of the coverages we were in. While there were some missed tackles, that definitely wasn't prevalent, and I thought Patterson did an excellent job in pursuit. Jenkins didn't really see a lot of action, IMO by design. The true test will obviously be Saturday, and we'll see how complicated things will get...I guarantee the "vanilla" won't be there...but again, the thing I liked the most was how well the DB's covered when they were in man. Gives me a lot of confidence...

I agree with the coverage I thought it was great and NIU guys werent open all day except for the screen plays and the two passes they had to the TE for about 15 yards.

When we come out in the cover 2 and use our zone blitzes McCoy is going to see a whole new look that what he saw this week.
