Everyone holds...Buckeye linemen included. If they called all the holding that some people would like, there would never be a play that counted. That said...what criteria do they use to actually toss the flag? It seems like most officials use the "did it have something directly to do with the play" thing...in other words, did the hold keep someone from making a tackle, getting a sack, or preventing a long gain. Problem with that is, with the complex schemes that both offense and defense use anymore, ANY hold can significantly affect a play.

I don't know what the "right" answer should be, but it seems like there should be something.

Holding occurs on just about every play. Normally it depends on the referees, and the tempo of the game if it's being called. I haven't noticed too many blatent holds against us so far this season, but then again I haven't been watching very hard for them either. I think that you notice calls that you think should be a hold when the game is tight and the defense needs to make plays. Normally it becomes a frustration cry from a fan, when they are trying to find any logic for why their team isn't playing the way that they feel it should be. At least that is when I tend to hear people yell "thats a hold".

This is the way I feel now, but who knows once Big Ten season comes along. I'm sure that there will be some bad no calls to come..........

If it occurs on every play then maybe the rule against it should be repealed. I'm not being sarcastic about that either Regardless, I understand letting it go when linemen are grabbing a little jersey a little outside the pads in the trenches, but it seems like blatant tackling of defensive linemen should be called whether or not it "affects the play", and it often seems like it isn't called. I won't even touch Iowa's "holding-free fake FG for a TD" against OSU in 2003 . . .

Which also happened to be a big play, and the reason why you remembered it. It kind of backs up my previous point.

Perhaps they can change the holding guidelines, but repealing the infraction will never happen. Sure, I get frustrated when I see a hold occur.......but I'm also the type of fan that realizes that football is won in so many other aspects, and that to blame the outcome of a game on a few single non holding calls is a bit shallow.

I still haven't forgotten all the missed holding calls against us last year when we played Penn St. Hopefully this weekend takes care of that

Every year since 2002, tOSU has ranked last for holding penalties against opposing offenses versus our defense.
In other words, every year, every other Big Ten team gets more holding calls called on their opponents than we do.
In more other words, every other Big Ten team gets called for holding more against other Big Ten teams than they do when playing us.

This can't be due to:
1. The worst D line play in the conference - we know that's not true.
2. All other Big Ten teams' ability to magically clean up their act when they play us.

So, what else could it be?

This can't be a coincidence that's it's happened every year since our NC.
Alll you have to do is watch the NC game vs Miami, the Iowa game in '03, ad nauseum, up to and including the NIU game this year. My god, Denlinger got basically ass-raped against UC last week, and it didn't get called. It's obvious the Big Ten refs look the other way more often for teams when they are playing us than when they play other BT teams.
