I'm thinking it's Air Force in that disgrace of a Liberty Bowl (no offense to AFA) at the end of the 1990 season.

Amazing as I look, because before that you have to go to ties with SMU in 1978 and TCU in 1961, and a loss to TCU in 1957. Of course, both were part of the old SWC I believe, so if you consider that the major conference that it was, I think you have to go back before 1940.
FtC: We did play BYU at the end of 1993 in the Holiday Bowl, and though I thought the effort was lackluster, we did win 28-21.
