Washington Sunday: Hillers trying to play up to their high expectations

It's hard to imagine what some of them might be. Trinity was averaging nearly 300 rushing yards per game entering the Chartiers Valley contest and its defense was performing at a high level behind senior linebackers Mike Yancich and Andrew Sweat, who are recruits of Penn State and Ohio State, respectively.

The team has run the ball extremely well with Yancich at tailback and Sweat at fullback behind a senior-dominated offensive line. Center Frank Dobbin, guards Taylor Deep and Eric Stultz, tackles Ed Gray and Ian Killen and tight end J.D. Berry all are experienced players who have provided the foundation for the offense.

Mike Yancich and Andrew Sweat combined to rush for 267 yards on 22 carries and each scored three times, as Trinity (3-2, 1-1) defeated West Mifflin (2-3, 1-2) in the Big Seven Conference. Yancich scored on runs 4, 28, and 58 yards, while Sweat scored on runs of 1, 9, and 3 yards.

Mentions the Trinity- Thomas Jefferson game. Watched the video of the game and it seemed like Sweat took on Nix every play to free up Yancich to make the plays, maybe that was just on the plays that were highlighted but it seemed every time that Nix was on Sweat.

Big Ten 'backers: For Trinity Senior, Yancich was the more impressive of the two linebackers. He has a longer frame, longer arms and has better pursuit speed. Yancich avoids blockers well and keeps his feet although he can be swallowed by bigger blockers at times. He has fluid hips and drops into coverage well.

Sweat was a little more stocky than expected as he doesn't have a long frame or long arms. He's a physical player and good at the point of attack and takes good angles, but he's not as fast as Yancich sideline to sideline. Sweat looks like a pure inside linebacker while Yancich could play either outside or inside.

Both linebackers also play running back on offense but neither has a future on offense at the next level. Sweat is built more like a fullback and is a more physical runner while Yancich has lighter feet and is more elusive but can get tripped up more easily.

Trinty wins and makes the playoffs...it appears Sweat is "dinged up"

"We have a pretty good stable (of running backs)," Dalton said. "The key is that we have to get them all in the package. Right now, (Andrew) Sweat is a little dinged up, but if we can get him healthy then, hopefully, we can get all of them going sooner or later."

The Hillers (6-3, 4-2) clinched third place in the Big Seven Conference with this win over visiting Peters Township (3-6, 2-4). Mike Yancich led the Hillers with 217 yards on 33 rushing attempts. Yancich scored on runs of 1, 9 and 12 yards. He also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Ian Haley.

It's a premium article and I know no one really cares about their recruiting coverage, but Sweat was named as the #2 LB in the nation when it comes to "diagnostic skills" by ESPN's Billy Tucker...meaning he is the second best player when it comes to reading a play and reacting to what he sees.

Not by ESPN (and not that any of this matters, but)...the only other breakdown by postion I have seen is this one:

They list the top run stopping LBs as Arthur Brown, Jon Major, Shayne Hale, Etienne Sabino and Lynn Katoa. FWIW, ESPN listed the top 3 run stuffers as Arthur Brown, Michael Mauti and Jon Major.

WPIAL Football Playoffs: Revitalized Trinity faces toughest challenge

On Monday, Trinity High School linebacker Andrew Sweat understands there will be no gray area.
"We will either be one week away from possibly selling tickets to Heinz Field or we will be turning in our pads," Sweat said. "That's pretty much it. There are just two options. That's where we are right now."
Where Trinity (7-3) is right now is in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals, where the Hillers will face Montour (10-0) at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Canon-McMillan's stadium.
If someone were to have said in mid-August that Trinity would still be playing in Week 11, few would have argued -- but making the same statement just one month ago would have been met by more than a few skeptics.
