Receiver to undergo more cancer treatment
Sunday, August 24, 2008
For the third time in nine months, Ohio State receiver Dan Potokar will undergo treatment for testicular cancer.
Potokar, a junior from Grove City, begins full-head radiation Monday after five lesions were found in his brain last week. It is not brain cancer, but rather testicular cancer that has spread.
He originally was diagnosed in December and had surgery to remove a testicle, followed by radiation treatments.
In the spring, the cancer returned in his lungs and abdomen. Potokar spent several weeks undergoing intensive chemotherapy in Indianapolis.
He returned home with the cancer apparently under control, began lifting weights and regained most of the 50 pounds he had lost during treatments.
"This cancer is aggressive, but so is Danny," said his aunt, Suzanne Thomas. "It's frustrating, but the family is optimistic."

While Ohio State receiver Dan Potokar began radiation treatment for testicular cancer this week, his aunt, Suzanne Thomas, noted how grateful his family is that the fund the university started for him last spring is still holding up.
The university originally raised about $75,000 to help the family cope with expenses related to his illness; he underwent intensive chemotherapy treatments in the spring in Indianapolis and his parents took time off work to be with him.
Potokar, a junior from Grove City, is having the current round of treatments in Columbus.
