am enjoying the BTN alot. turn to it before I go to ESPN, to see if any OSU sport is on.
Got a question for the audience.......why was there only one football game on last week. Out here, there is one channel, but three other 'alternate' channels, and none of them were lit up on Saturday. Now, if the BTN controls the rights to Big Ten sports, did they make more money by allowing ESPN to telecast the OSU-NW game than they would have made broadcasting it themselves? And so on.
Was disappointed that there weren't always four games running concurrently. Just as I wouldn't mind watching four soccer matches concurrently, and definitely want to see four Big Ten basketball games going on at the same time (clicker fever).
Anyone got any insights? Thanks.

I love the re-aired games on during midday/evenings.

Cali, this is why. A lot of those 4 at once events involved a lot of poor b10 games. Last week featured UM-PSU, Wisconsin-Iowa (50% national), and espn picked up the OSU game. Better value for them than the Indiana-Illinois game I guess, though that was more interesting for a hardcore fan.

OSU was on ESPN2, Penn St., Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan were on ABC. Not sure about the other games. |

It's in the interest of the Big Ten to have as many games as possible nationally televised. In a move that was made in conjunction with the creation of the BTN, the conference structured their agreement with ABC/ESPN so that games that are regionally broadcast on ABC to be simulcast on an ESPN channel out-of-market. That's why there are instances like the OSU-NW game where some people got it on ABC and some on ESPN. Where the BTN fits in is that it is designed to replace ESPN+ and games being shown on GamePlan. Instead of only being available regionally and by subscription, those games will be "nationally broadcast". Of course, it's going to take wider distribution of the network in order for that to become a reality. For now anyway, the BTN isn't out there takeover the market for Big Ten football. Everybody knows that the money and the ratings are going to come from the biggest games being on the big networks. As for there only being one game on the BTN last week - that's due to the fact that now that conference play has started up, you are now looking at a slate of five conference games and one intersectional game as opposed to ten or eleven intersectional games - so there are less games on the slate to begin with. When you put one or two of those games on ABC and another two or three on the ESPN channels, that doesn't leave too much for the BTN. Count on it being that way for pretty much the rest of the season.

Ohio State versus M*ch*g*n trumps everything. It trumps your record. It trumps whether it's dangerous or you don't have a chance or any of those kinds of things. It trumps all things because it's the Ohio State-M*ch*g*n game. And I would like to think our guys understand that, but there's only one demonstration of understanding that and that's at 12:00 noon on Saturday.

That's the way it was supposed to work, but last weekend Iowa-Wisky was on Gameplan, and in what might be the biggest game to date in the Big Ten, the OSU-Purdue game next Saturday is going to be regionally telecast on ABC, with out of market viewers only getting it on Gameplan. To complicate matters, the other game involves NoD, so even if you live in the heart of Big Ten country, you are going to have to pony up the $100 to see the Buckeyes. BTN was supposed to stop this nonsense, and it has done nothing but complicate things.

If it's any consolation, I believe the BTN reairs all of the conf games during the week. I doubt that will satisfy the hardcore fans out there, though.
