Sunday Morning Quarterback :: College Football Insight, Ramblings and Entertainment has a pretty good breakdown of the insane prices the B10 Network is asking for.

There are many holes in Comcast's position. First they say it's too provincial and lacks national appeal. It wasn't that way UNTIL they got outbid by Fox, to be the partner of the Big Ten. They claim the $1.10 fee is too high for the 8 state region of the Big Ten. If that's true, how can they pay $1.97 for one city, Philadelphia Comcast? The other ironic thing is that they readily admit they would take the .10 price for out of market regions. They will take that very cheap rate and charge a very high price for a package, like the MLB package. So it appears they have no qualms about passing on the expense to customers, when it's a benefit to them. Although every customer can't convert to Directv, they know that over that 8 state region they will lose thousands of customers. The attempted spin by Cohen to blame the Big Ten, instead of Comcast, won't fly with the customer base. It's not just a coincidence that Cohen worked for the Mayor of Philly and now Comcast is paying an incredible $1.97 for Comcast Philadelphia. The minute some cable company tries to imply that they are acting in the best interest of their customers, I take that with a grain of salt.

I don't see the NFL network being more attractive than the Big Ten network in this region. NFL shows how many live games per year? and if you live in an NFL city, your NFL network game shows up on local TV if the local team is playing. I can miss maybe one Browns game if I don't have NFL network. How many Ohio State football and basketball games will I miss? At least three football, and probably more than half the basketball schedule.

Good post. I'd like to see a comparison of the BTN's $0.10 per customer outside the region vs. what they pay for other sports channels that nobody watches like Versus, Golf, Speed, etc. 10 cents per customer is nothing, but of course they'll use that as an opportunity to force you to buy a $15.00/month digital package, and possibly a $5/month sports package on top of that.

So you're going to ignore the insane $1.10 per customer to watch [censored]ty games and [censored]ty sports, and focus on the $.10 out of market price?

It's just sad that they try to insult the public. I would respect Comcast if they just said they can't make enough money on this deal. Don't tell me you are concerned about customers having to pay for something they don't want to watch. I don't want 75% of the channels on cable, but I am forced to pay for them anyway to view the 25% I actually want.

Then why is Comcast willing to pay $1.97 for a station that revolves around one city, Philadelphia? Don't forget that the BTN covers more than just football. Don't be deceived by Comcast's spin. They aren't asking for ESPN type of money.

And yes, they do cover lots of other events...events that people care about considerably less than tOSU vs YSU. |
